Grade 4

Purple Crush 20, Green Hornets 18: In nail-biting fashion, the Purple Crush hustled up and down the court for 32 minutes in order to avoid the sting of the Green Hornets. Katie Ryan came out on fire scoring 5 points in the first half. Nicky Shairer and Kelsey Pearson scored 4 points apiece to help lead the Purple Crush to victory. Tough defense was played by Rebecca Alicea, Ashley Hammond, Eileen McCreary, AB Terry, Olivia Steare, and Sydney Howard. For the Green Hornets, Juliette Cryder scored 6 points, while Virginia Hepp and Alea Willis each scored 4.

Celtics 40, Filan Nighthawks 33: The Celtics won a tightly fought game with the Nighthawks. Shannon Jackman played a great game defensively, while Genevieve Murray led all scorers with 16 points. For the Nighthawks, Game Captain Grace Bertsche led the effort with Angela Carrerio, Hallie Filan and Kali Ryder with 6 points each, supported by Karsen Pirone with 9 and Sarah Tressler with 4. Ryssa Swanson and Megan Riccardi played tough defense down the stretch.

Green Hornets 34, Tootsie Rolls 20: Kylee Raiano led the charge for the Green Hornets by scoring 10 points. Mary Celentano scored 10 points for the Tootsie Rolls.

Grade 5

Newtown 40, Wilton 21: In the first two minutes of play, Newtown capitalized on turnovers for an early 6-0 lead. Wilton pulled it together but was no match for Newtown’s slick passing game and smothering defense. Alison Kelleher and Lauren Adams distributed the ball well, creating numerous scoring opportunities. In a well-balanced offensive effort, Jackie Matthews had a season high 8 points with 3 field goals and went 2-for-2 from the foul line. Kristen Cirone, Nicki DaPra, and Kim Buttery chipped in 6 points each. Jenna Lavelle, Tess Davenport and Carolina Stubbs rounded out the scoring.

 

Grade 6

Newtown 32, Darien 25: Darien kept pace with Newtown during the first half of the game, keeping the score tied at 12 apiece. In the second half, Newtown’s guards took control of the game, running the floor and creating opportunities. Marcella Daily had 6 points, while Rylee Mulligan and Julia Haskins each had 4. Erin Burns played tough in the post, grabbing rebounds and adding 7 points for Newtown.

Newtown 34, Fairfield 24: Newtown took command of the game early in the first half, outscoring Fairfield 14-9. After a shaky beginning to the second half, Newtown pulled it together, eventually taking control of the play in the paint. Erin Burns and Alexis Mason were high scorers for Newtown. Guards Sarah Houle, Julia Doyle, and Lauren Carrino played strong defense forcing several key turnovers and steals.

Grade 7

Newtown 32, Norwalk 28: Visiting Newtown handed Norwalk only its second loss of the season. Hailey Conrad scored 12 points, while Meghan Doyle hit a 3-pointer on her way to 9 points. Olyvia Shaw scored 8 and Nikki Zaccaro 3. Natalie Shaker was strong on the defensive glass.

Greenwich 41, Newtown 24: A sharp-shooting Greenwich squad was too much for Newtown. Doyle led with 7 points, followed by Bella Luciano with 5. Conrad pulled down 8 boards, Colleen McCarthy 7, and Cassidy Datin 5. Jillian Pieretti had 6 steals and Jess Maturo scored 3 points

 

Grades 7-8

Style 26, South Cove Globetrotters 19: Rachel Williams led the Style to victory with 10 points while Olivia Hamula chipped in 5. Annie Hoffman dished out 3 assists and Kayla Ward and Tessa Leon Gambetta each swiped 3 steals. Cally Peterson controlled the backboards, hauling in 4 rebounds.

The Celtics 26, CTS Micro Flintstones 22: Allie Indelicato scored 11 and Kayla Kordish added 8 to pace the Celtics’ offense. Tegan Doherty provided the defensive energy with 5 steals and Ashleigh Shaw grabbed 8 rebounds in the win. The Flintstones, playing with only five players, gave the Celtics all they could handle. Kate Laaksonen handled the point guard duties and scored a team high 10 points. Sarah Spillane handed out 3 assists and Samantha Lotko pulled down 8 rebounds. Muriel Daccache and Nicole Frascatore played excellent defense.

Worldwide Coverage Spartans 28, The Blitz 20: Kayla DiSibio scored a game high 14 points to lead the Spartans to victory. Kaitlyn Hull and Grace Larsen played strong defense and forced many turnovers. Marissa Thill chipped in 8 points, Haley Williams added 4, and Emily Neave completed the scoring with 2. Carly Kreshpan scored 8 points for the Blitz, while Maddie Pirone added 7 and Jess Mullany scored 5. Jamie Calandro played her first game of the season and pulled down a team high 8 rebounds. Megan Nahmias played outstanding defense, forcing many turnovers throughout the game.

Boys

Grade 4

White Mavs 36, St Theresa’s 3rd Grade 11: Jack Lydon started the scoring with a great pass from Kyle Good off the tip and the White Mavs never looked back. Jack Mulligan led the scoring with 14 points with Max Wrage dropping 6. Jack Kuligowski, Sammy Eppers and Kyle Sullivan led the offense with strong play at the point. Charlie Eppers and Patrick Oberstadt played great pressure defense and helped on the boards.

New Fairfield 18, Blue Mavs 16: In a tough match-up, the Blue Mavs lost to New Fairfield, 18-16, on Saturday morning at NYA. Josh Taylor led the Blue Mavs with 10 points, 12 rebounds and 5 steals. Nick Kalra put up 4 points and had 2 steals, while Liam Murphy added another 2 points and 4 steals. Keenan Murphy snatched 7 rebounds, Kalra grabbed 4, and Drew Mitchell and Dillon Robinson brought down 1 each. Kieran Coffey and Zach Droukas kept up defensive pressure under the boards and at point, but the New Fairfield offense managed to connect for 2 in the final minutes to secure the win.

White Mavs 24, Orange 19: Jack Mulligan and Kyle Good combined for 16 points and 15 rebounds in a close match on Sunday in Milford. The White Mavs came back from an early deficit with a spark from Charlie Eppers off the bench. Sammy Eppers, Patrick Oberstadt and Kyle Sullivan wreaked havoc on the Orange guards with all out defensive efforts. Jack Kuligowski had 7 assists at the point. The White Mavs sealed the win in the final minute with a great inbounds pass from Jack Lydon to Jack Mulligan for a layup.

Blue Mavs 23, Amity 10: In a total team effort, the Blue Mavs beat Amity, 23-10, on Sunday afternoon in Milford. Liam Murphy, with 8 points, 3 rebounds and 6 steals, and Keenan Murphy, with 5 points, 5 rebounds and 1 steal, led the offense for the Blue Mavs. Josh Taylor chipped in 4 points, and Zach Droukas and Nick Kalra added 2 apiece. Drew Mitchell worked to disrupt the Amity offense, while the Blue Mavs underneath were strong on the boards. Kalra snatched 9 rebounds, Taylor grabbed 4, Dillon Robinson brought down 3, and Kieran Coffey and Zach Droukas combined for 4 in the win.

Grade 5

Bethel 29, Newtown Gold Rush 27: The Gold Rush fought back from a six-point second half deficit against Bethel only to come up a basket short. Cameron Trivers led the team with 6 points, followed by Shane Demers with 5 points. Shea Talbot calmly hit 2 crucial foul shots to tie the game in the final seconds of the fourth quarter and ended the game with a total of 4 points. John Albanesi and James Clifford chipped in 3 points each, while Eric Morroe, Reed Hammond, and Brennan Mayer added 2 points each. Riley McCafferty and Danny Schreiber kept the pressure on with numerous rebounds and multiple assists.

Newtown Gold Rush 35, New Fairfield 20: The Gold Rush’s balanced scoring attack was too much for New Fairfield. Shane Demers led the Gold Rush with 10 points, followed by Eric Moore who had 7 points. John Albanesi sunk 2 foul shots and had a total of 4 points for the game. Riley McCafferty (2), James Clifford (2), Brennan Mayer (2), Danny Schreiber (2), Cameron Trivers (2), Shea Talbot (2) and Reed Hammond (2) combined for an additional 14 points

Grade 6

Swishers 31, Hot Shots 26: The Swishers raced out to an 18-5 halftime time lead and held off a strong second half comeback by the talented Hot Shots to win 31-26. Grant Moxham had 9 points and Ryan Mailloux had 7 to lead the Swisher offense, while Liam Begany played a great game with 4 points and 7 rebounds. Jack Oltran was outstanding on defense and Ryan Williams contributed 10 rebounds and 3 steals. John Payne had 6 rebounds and Wyatt Moyers had 11 to help control the boards. With the help of the full court press, the Hot Shots closed the gap but ran out of gas at the end. Greg Brissette led the Hot Shots with 8 points, while PJ Pfeiffer had 6 and Matt Principi 4. Defensively, Jack Murray continued his great rebounding and Michael Narducci and Tristan Crone covered the floor well and made some key steals.

Tornadoes 34, Sox 19: The Tornadoes prevailed 34-19 as Brian Montoya and John Finnegan paced the Tornadoes’ scoring attack. Michael Garner, Avi Bhaya, Adam Wolff, and Rhett Saunders all scored as the Tornadoes balance helped them to victory. Kevin Riccardi, Saunders, Wolff, and Montoya combined for 41 rebounds. Owen Walsh, Bobby Ward, and Finnegan racked up multiple assists, while Matthew Lundquist and the rest of the Tornadoes delivered a strong defensive effort.

Invaders 35, Advisory Trust.com Doughnuts 21: Advisory Trust.com Doughnuts took an early 15-9 lead, then Dominic Scalzo ignited the Invaders with the first of his many steals and added 4 points. Ethan Aug and Ben Harrison commanded the boards with numerous offensive and defensive rebounds and Ben also scored 10 points and went 2 for 2 from the charity stripe. Colin Kelly and Jackson Dooley added several assists and Jack Miller pumped in 12 points. Tyler Gaynor had a strong game as well and played tough against his twin brother Kyle. The Advisory Trust.com Doughnuts fought a hard game - keeping the score very close through the first half. They continued to work hard in the second half but couldn’t get their shots to fall. Mark Hall and Teddy Wojcik played strong defense and both Nick and Josh Harper played an all around strong game. James Heran had some tough defensive moves and Ian Shull showed great ball handling skills. Danny Grosso and Aidan Ford spearheaded the offense and Jimmy Doutney pulled down rebounds with Kyle Gaynor.

Celtics 32, Black Hawks 31: The game was back and forth, and the Celtics matched baskets throughout, but the keys to victory were the C’s strong defense and team work. Leading the D were four individuals: Jack Bittman, Justin Coehlo, Cayden Dunn, and James Hobar. Bitman protected the paint, and redirected shots or attempted put backs, while also cleaning the glass to start the break. Coehlo had the biggest heart of all with his huge energy and hustle all game, which led to key rebounds gained, forcing turnovers and making steals, and was hugely effective during the full court press. Dunn played an outside role this week and ran against the opponent’s guards in order to shut down their perimeter attack, which led to key stops and no easy baskets in this close battle. Lastly, Hobar was tenacious on D, having great hustle all four quarters, and doing the little things too that don’t show up in the box score, like fighting through picks, playing help D, and communicating with teammates. The Black Hawk offensive leaders were Robert Murrray, 9 points, Ricky Mariani, 5, Thomas Skrelja, 4, and Evan Landgrebe with 3. Defensive standouts were Ben Terry, Wally Skrelja and Doug Carriero. Leading rebounders for the Black Hawks were Thomas Skrelja, 8, and Robert Murray, 7.

Thunder 43, Monstars 24: For the fourth game in a row the Thunder continued to improve and is looking like a strong team. The boys are nailing the basics and are learning the flow of the game. Thunder had another balanced game in the 43 to 24 win over the Monstars. On the offense side of the court Eugene Citrano led all scorers with 17 points followed by Alex Janiak (12), Kia Toomey (6), Matthew Sadowski (4), Kevin Reiss (2), and Jack Carello (2). The offensive rebounding and passing improved this game as well. The team combined for 27 rebounds. Alex Janiak led all rebounders with 10 followed by Kai Toomey (7), Matthew Sadowski (6), Adam Farley (2), Kenny Malin (1), and Jack Buchler (1). Team Thunder had 6 key steals (Eugene (2), Adam (2), Alex (1), and Kai (1). The boys are looking for the open lanes, taking good shots, and are showing good sportsmanship with their teammates and their opponents. The Monstars were led on offense by Ryan Patrick and Josh Dunn. Jake Duarte and Anthony Isabella led defensive attack. Andrew Buzzi was the team’s leading rebounder with 8 boards.

Tornadoes 32, Buckateers 19: The Tornadoes got out to a slow start and trailed 8-6 early, but used a strong third quarter to take a 10-point lead to close out the Buckateers 32-19. The Tornadoes once again had a balanced attack with 7 players scoring, led by Michael Garner, John Finnegan, Avi Bhaya, Adam Wolff, Brian Montoya, Bobby Ward and Kevin Riccardi. Matthew Lundquist delivered several key rebounds in the third, while Rhett Saunders and Owen Walsh teamed up to play stifling perimeter defense and shut down the dribble-penetration of the Buckateers. Trailing by only 3 at half time and by 5 midway through the third quarter, the Buckateers ran out of gas playing with a limited squad of 8 players. Dylan Champagne kept the Bucks close, scoring 10 points after shooting 5 for 7 from the floor. Travis Huzina, Cameron Champagne, Jack Vaughan and Sam Parsons combined for 9 points. Vaughan led the Buckateers with 3 steals while Harry Eppers led the team with 4 rebounds. Sam Parsons and Liam Jones held there own under the boards fighting off the Tornadoes tall players. The Buckateers played really hard, gritty basketball and look to get back at it again next week.

Newtown 43, Monroe 23: Tough Guys hit the hard court fast and furiously. Irwin Grewal, Kyle Roche, and Andrew DeLuca, the human rebounding machines, pulled it down and put it back up, with Silas Decker and Evan Eggleston leaving it all on the court, skin included. Ryan Kost and Ryan Escoda moved the ball effortlessly, leaving Monroe in the dust. Adam Bergeron was hot-hot-hot, and Jake Perone, Nick Weiland and Liam Deakin sunk ’em, smiling from the line.

Southbury 45, Newtown 41: Newtown Tough Guys went in neck ’n neck, but they could not rebound from a third quarter slump despite heroic efforts from Kyle Roche who owned the glass, nailed key clutch plays, and hit every shot he took. Silas Decker, Andrew Deluca, Jake Perone, and Irwin Grewal practically shut down Southbury’s paint, with Nick Weiland and Evan Eggleston relentless on D. Down 31-20 in the third, Liam Deakin and Ryan Escoda scrappy defense got in the heads of a tough Southbury squad, while Adam Bergeron and Ryan Kost led the offense to 18 unanswered points. Kost’s 3 pointers fired up the guys, but Southbury’s success on the foul line hurt Newtown.

Madison 39, Newtown 33: Adam Bergeron had fire-hot hands all game long. Nick Weiland played like a madman and Kyle Roche can make his foul shots and grabbed rebound after rebound leaving a stunned Madison up by one at the half, 17-16. What few Roche missed, Irwin Grewal and Jake Perone were quick to grab, with Grewal’s famous baby hook keeping the crowd gasping. Birthday boys Ryan Escoda and Silas Decker blew out more than candles, pounding the hardcourt looking for redemption. Liam Deakin and Evan Eggleston fought the good fight, and Newtown came back strong, but a little too late.

Bridgeport 58, Newtown 46: Ryan Kost showed some fine ballwork, dancing around the big boys from Bridgeport, straight to the net or dumping off to giants Adam Bergeron and Kyle Roche — whose hands continued to be smokin’ hot. Evan Eggleston worked strong passes, dishing blindly to Irwin Grewal who brought it home. The Escoda Hawk Nest filled the stands, and Scooter did not disappoint: he and Nick Weiland stole the ball from guys twice their size, returning from a Jenga of arms and legs with the ball time and time again. Jake Perone, Andrew DeLuca, and Silas Decker owned the paint and, as usual, Liam Deakin was relentless attacking the ball honeybadger style.

Grade 7

Greenwich 81, Newtown 65: Home team Greenwich put on an impressive offensive display, hitting nine 3-pointers in the contest. Newtown kept fighting and was led by Hayes Kelchner with 28 points and 17 rebounds. Bobby Haskins kicked in 6 points and 8 rebounds, while Justin Dunn added 5 points. It was the first league loss for Newtown.

Grades 7-8

Celtics 72, Big Dogs 45: The Celtics improved their record to 4-1 with an impressive victory over the Big Dogs. The game was tied at 11-11 at the end of the first quarter. Jack Riley dropped in two buckets to open the second quarter and very quickly the Celtics took advantage of a fast “run and gun” transition game opening up a 10-point lead by halftime. in the secpnd half, the Celtics never looked back. Timmy LeBlanc scored a season high 16, followed by Joe Duero 14 points (3 blocked shots), James Carney netted 11 and Jake Courchene-Roy 8 points (5 steals). Every Celtic player scored in the victory. The Big Dogs offense was led by Patrick Godino with 12 points. James Accousti, Colin Patrick and Jack Phelps, dropped in 11, 8, and 8 points, respectively. The defense was charged by Tyler LaCroce, Thomas Stanczyk and Will LeMay. Open court pressure was strong from Jerl Draper, Paul Whitaker, and Alex Dunleavy.

Thunder 53, Grizzlies 29: The Thunder had strong offense from Austin Desouza (14 points), Matt Davis (11 points) and Austin Buss-Martinez (10 points). Solid rebounding was provided by Dan McCarthy, Owen Gray, and Evan Cerreta at both ends of the floor. Bryan Kiley and Spencer Tolson directed the offensive plays with Chris Mok and David Usher adding energy and creativity.

Alpacas 52, Wolfpack 39: Excellent ball distribution, tenacious defense, and a balanced scoring attack is what enabled the Alpacas to jump out to an early lead and then coast in their victory over the Wolfpack. Josh Houle, Henry Lyon, and Owen McInerney all reached double-digits combining for 36 points, while Adam Bell led the defense and controlled the boards adding an extremely efficient 8 points on 4 of 5 shooting. Jack Procaccini led the Wolfpack scoring with 12 points, while Jimmy Buck added 9 and Matthew Fuchs chipped in with 8. Jimmy Craig played a solid game on defense for the Wolfpack, making several steals in the open court.

Eyes on the Prize 51, Cool Running 22: In the win, every player scored and the offense was led by Dylan Tyrell with 12 points and 8 boards, Sam Duffy with 12 points and 7 boards, and Steven Moccio, who almost had a triple double with 7 points, 7 assists, and 7 rebounds. Elliott Bennett added 4 points and 8 rebounds, while will Ballard chipped in with a season high 6 points and 2 steals. Robert Lombardo had 4 points, 3 assists, and 2 rebounds, Nick Lombardo had 4 points and 2 rebounds, and hunter booker had 2 points, 1 assist, 1 board, and 1 steal. Cool Runnings was led on offense by Matt Kugler and Henry Primavera. Charlie Fletcher and Jake Oliger played tough defense all game, while Ryan Marron was a beast on the glass.

Cushman & Wakefield Fury 55, CTS Micro Bulldogs 44: Devin Luzietti had a double-double, leading all scorers with 17 points and grabbing 18 rebounds to stake the Fury to a 43-27 fouth quarter lead. He also had a team season high 5 blocked shots. Gordon Walsh finished with 14 points including 2 for 4 from downtown and he added 3 assists. Colby Olson scored 7 points after shooting 50 percent from the floor, including 1 for 3 from 3-point range. Nick Venezia chipped in 6 points and also had 3 assists. Ryan Marusi, playing guard for the first time this season scored 4 points. Peter Clifford, Ryan Brello and Mitchell Long combined for 7 points. Brello also had 7 rebounds, while Clifford grabbed 9. Andrew Janco had a pair or rebounds and 2 assists.

Murphy Basketball Camp Da Bulls 48, Lovino Brothers Thunderbirds 44: For the Lovino Brothers Thunderbirds, Michael Doyle led the way with 16 points and some sharp long distance shooting. Jeremy Salaris had another strong game with 11 points and several rebounds, and Sean Dalton and Cole Siksay chipped in with 4 points each.

Huskies 60, Raymond James Financial Newtown Celtics 43: The Huskies continued their strong presence with Sam Czel leading his team with 24 points. Robert Katrinak and Tim VanderHave added 15 points, while Markus Wessel dominated the boards. Tight defense was provided by Jacob Steinbrey and Brad Capeci. Once again, all players scored.

Raymond James Financial Lockouts 38, Wolverines 18: Kevin Arther and Stephen Brittin provided solid defense for the Wolverines. Robert Hutchins and Adam Weber led the scoring.

Grade 8

New Canaan 58, Newtown 51: Mason Melillo hit three 3-pointers on his way to 15 points. Matt Gerics ran the offense efficiently from the point and scored 12, which Andrew Svanda was tough under the boards and added 6 points.

Newtown 47, Norwalk 50: Newtown took a 5-point lead early in the fourth, but could not finish off Norwalk. Ryan Shaw played big in the paint and scored 18. Dillon Palumbo slashed his way to the basket for 13 points, while Jamie Cochrane pressured the ball all game and contributed 5 points.

Newtown 61, New Milford 48: Newtown took the lead early in the third and pulled away in the fourth for the victory. Gerics had a game-high 19 points, followed by Shaw with 11. Nick Samuelson controlled the defensive boards and chipped in with 6 points.

Newtown 58, Bethel 47: Newtown was up by 20 at the end of three and cruised to their second straight win. Gerics made a variety of driving layups for his 17 points, while Palumbo was hot early and finished with 9. Geoff Santore repeatedly beat the defense down court and scored 7, while James Frazzetta played tough defense and scored 4.
