The dispatchers at the Newtown Emergency Communications Center at Town Hall South at 3 Main Street report the following fire calls and the responding fire companies:

Thursday, January 17: 5:21 pm, wires down, near 176 Mount Pleasant Road, Hawleyville responded.

Friday, January 18: 7:01 am, ice rescue of deer fallen through the ice at Taunton Lake, NUSAR, Dodgingtown, Hawleyville, and Hook & Ladder responded; 1:02 pm, alarm, 320 South Main Street, Botsford and Hook & Ladder responded; 1:39 pm, alarm, 41 West Street, Hook & Ladder and Dodgingtown responded; 6:29 pm, motor vehicle accident, I-84, Sandy Hook responded.

Saturday, January 19: No calls listed.

Sunday, January 20: Overall on January 20, the five local volunteer fire companies received 79 calls for service across town, of which 70 calls involved reports of “wires down” due to the winter storm during the period from 6:39 am to 10:09 pm. Besides those calls for wires down, the other fire calls were: 2 am, alarm, 63 Castle Hill Road, Hook & Ladder responded; 5:24 pm, illegal burn/outdoor fire, near 59 Cedar Hill Road, Hook & Ladder responded; 8:08 am, brush fire, near 23 High Bridge Road, Botsford responded; 11:09 am, burning odor indoors, 13 Grays Plain Road, Sandy Hook responded; 12:51 pm, investigation, 71 Head O’ Meadow Road, Hook & Ladder responded; 2:09 pm, alarm, 3 Wilderness West Road, Hawleyville responded; 6:55 pm, alarm, 5 Sutherland Drive, Sandy Hook responded; 8:46 pm, investigation, 13 Lyrical Lane, Sandy Hook responded; 10:45 pm, alarm, 35 Rock Ridge Road, Dodgingtown responded.

Wednesday, January 23: 9:28 am, alarm, 228 South Main Street, Botsford and Hook & Ladder responded.

Thursday, January 24: 3:58 am, alarm, 266 South Main Street, Botsford responded; 4:14 am, alarm, 600 Brookside Court, Hawleyville responded.

A Volkswagen Passat station wagon and a Chevrolet commercial van were involved in a low-speed collision midafternoon on Monday, January 21, at Wheels gas station at 67 Church Hill Road. Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Newtown Hook & Ladder volunteer firefighters were dispatched to the scene. The Volkswagen's driver was transported to the hospital to be checked. Police said the accident is under investigation. Details on the incident were not immediately available.  (Bee Photo, Gorosko)
