Whitecapped waves surged across the Pootatuck River in Sandy Hook Center, just downstream of the Church Hill Road bridge, midafternoon on Thursday, January 24, illustrating the effect of heavy rains on the area.

As the river barreled down its course, it collected stormwater from freshets falling from adjacent cliffs.

The river’s rapid fall over a dam at Rocky Glen Mill at 75 Glen Road set up a heavy mist in that area which produced the effect of a foggy day. As the afternoon progressed, the heavy rains relented.
