Church Hill Crash

Police report an accident on Church Hill Road near The Boulevard about 4 pm January 23.

Motorist David Tinsley, 36, of Roxbury was driving a 1998 GMC Jimmy eastbound on Church Hill Road behind eastbound motorist John White, 51, of Rochester, Vermont, who was driving a 1994 Geo station wagon, police said.

The Geo stopped for stopped traffic and was struck from behind by the GMC, police said. There were no injuries.

Police issued Tinsley a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

I-84 Accident

State police report that motorist Edith A. Saunders, 59, of 60 Great Ring Road, Sandy Hook, who was driving a 1995 Honda Accord sedan westbound on Interstate 84 west of Exit 10 about 8:40 am January 22, applied her brakes after seeing an accident in front of her and was struck from behind by a westbound 1996 Volkswagen Jetta sedan driven by Jayson Barker, 29, of West Haven.

There were no injuries. State police said Barker failed to drive a reasonable distance apart.

 

Evading Responsibility

A local man told police about 7 am January 24 that someone had struck his vehicle, which had been parked on Baldwin Road. Police are investigating.

Mt Pleasant Collision

Police said motorist Luis Ortiz, 46, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 2001 Ford van, was traveling northbound on Mt Pleasant Road in a right-hand climbing lane on January 24 and attempting to pass a vehicle on the right, police said. The Ford hit a curb and a snowbank along the road shoulder and moved to the left, striking a parallel northbound 2000 Chevrolet Impala driven by Albert S. Boyson, 83, of 19 South Main Street, police said. The accident occurred near Johnnie Cake Lane.

There were no injuries. Police issued Ortiz an infraction ticket on a charge of passing on the right.

Walnut Tree Hill Road

Police report motorist Paula Woodhouse, 41, of 11 Farm Field Ridge Road, Sandy Hook, was driving a 1998 Ford Taurus on Walnut Tree Hill Road near Antler Pine Road about 6 pm January 23, when as she passed another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction, she heard a noise. She then realized that the noise had been a collision in which the passing vehicle had struck her exterior rear-view mirror, police said. The mirror on the Ford was missing and the other driver had continued onward without stopping, police said. There were no injuries, police said.

Berkshire Accident

Police said motorist Larry L. Bingaman, 50, of 31 Old Farm Hill Road, who was driving a 1997 Buick LeSabre, was traveling eastbound on Berkshire Road about 8 am January 24 when he stopped for a non-contact vehicle in front of him which had stopped to turn left.

Eastbound motorist Brooke T. Heck, 33, of 43 Moccasin Trail, Sandy Hook, who was driving a 1992 Ford Bronco behind the Buick, failed to stop in time and struck the Buick, police said. There were no injuries.

Police issued Heck an infraction ticket on charges of following to closely and operating an unregistered motor vehicle.

South Main Street

Motorist Robert J. Attanasio, 40, of 20 Fieldstone Drive, who was driving a 1998 Subaru Outback southbound on South Main Street about 8 am January 20, slid on some snow, went off the right road shoulder and struck fencing in front of Resurrection Cemetery, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued Attanasio a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Cellular Phone Missing

Police said they learned January 18 that a person lost a cellular telephone in the Edmond Town Hall movie theater about 10 pm January 12. Anyone who finds the model V-2297 Motorola phone is asked to bring it to the police station.

Sandy Hook Crash

Police said motorist Joseph Myers-Bittner, 17, of 307 Berkshire Road, who was driving a 1994 Chevrolet station wagon eastbound on Berkshire Road about 1:20 pm January 24, was preparing to turn left into a driveway when he was struck from behind by an eastbound 2000 Freightliner truck driven by Andres Garcia, 29, of New Haven.

The Chevrolet was pushed across the street by the impact, police said. Both drivers reported neck and back pain, police said. Police issued Garcia a written warning for following too closely.

Warrant Service

Police report they served an arrest warrant against Sean Muldowney, 34, of Milford about 8 pm January 25 at his home, without incident, listing charges including evading responsibility in connection with a December 21 auto accident in Newtown.

Police released Muldowney on a  $3,500 bond for a February 8 court appearance.

Warrant

Police said Jaroslaw A. Magon, 31,  of 163 Papoose Hill Road turned himself in at the police station about 7:30 pm January 25 after learning there was a warrant for his arrest. Police charged Magon with failure to appear in court and violation of probation in connection with past incidents. After processing, police released Magon on a $4,000 bond for a February 8 appearance in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charges.

South Main Deer

Police report that motorist Peter Kearney, 35, of 2 Bridle Path Trail was driving a 1999 Nissan Maxima sedan northbound on South Main Street near Huntingtown Road about 9:20 pm January 24 when a deer ran into the roadway, resulting in the auto striking the deer. Kearney was not injured in the collision, police said.

Church Hill Crash

Motorist Kelli M. Peterman, 16, of 1 Patriot Ridge Road, Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Malibu, was stopped at a traffic light on westbound Church Hill Road at Commerce Road about 5 pm January 24 when she was struck from behind by a westbound 1987 Dodge Dakota pickup truck driven by Wayne L. Cabral, 39, of 23 Sunnyview Terrace, Sandy Hook, police said. There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Cabral for following too closely.

Left Turn

Police said motorist Rebecca A. Soder, 40, of 6 Merlin’s Lane, was driving a 1998 Lincoln Navigator sport-utility vehicle westbound on Church Hill Road near Newtown Convenience Store and was attempting to make a left turn from the westbound “thru-traffic” lane. As the Lincoln crossed into the westbound “left turn only” lane, it made contact with a 1989 Honda Accord driven by Nicole M. Pongonis, 33, of 1 Bradley Lane, Sandy Hook. There were no injuries. Police issued Soder a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Warrant Case

Police report they served an arrest warrant January 28 against Hiep M. Tran, 22, of Flushing, N.Y., listing charges of second-degree failure to appear in court and operating a motor vehicle while under suspension in connection with past incidents. Police said they released Tran on a $500 bond for a February 14 appearance in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charges.

Two Cases

Police report they are investigating two separate criminal incidents which are similar in nature, involving burglary and larceny at local businesses.

Police said that late on the afternoon of January 25, a young male had entered T.R. Paul, Inc., at 14 Commerce Road and also entered The Taunton Press on nearby Church Hill Road. The male apparently stole wallets from purses, removed cash from the wallets, and then discarded the wallets. Police are investigating.

Deer On Road

Police said motorist William Black, 43, of 301 South Main Street was driving a 1991 Ford Taurus westbound on Toddy Hill Road early on the morning of January 27 when a deer entered the road. The Ford then went off the right side of the road, striking a utility pole, police said. Black then left the scene of the crash and went home to report the collision to police, police said. Black was not injured. Police issued Black a written warning for making an improper turn.

Alcohol Charge

Police said motorist Shawn Pennywell, 20, of New Milford was driving southbound on Route 25 January 27 when he encountered an ambulance which was responding to a call. Pennywell thought he was being pulled over, so he stopped, police said.

Pennywell told an ambulance attendant that he did not have a driver’s license. The police department was informed of the situation, police said. Police said that on investigating they found that the vehicle Pennywell was driving contained a large amount of alcohol.

Police charged Pennywell with illegal possession of alcohol by a minor and operating a motor vehicle without a license. Police released Pennywell for a February 8 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Obtuse Road

Motorist Frederick Paoletti, 45, of New Milford was driving a 2001 Ford Explorer sport-utility vehicle northbound on Obtuse Road about 12:27 am January 27 when he failed to negotiate a curve and drove off the left side of the road, striking a tree, police said.

Paoletti was not injured. Police said they issued Paoletti an infraction ticket on a charge of failure to drive to the right on a curve.

Queen Street Crash

Police report a two-vehicle accident on the northern end of Queen Street about 3:33 pm January 26.

Motorist Paul Perkins, 62, of 45 Huntingtown Road, who was driving a 1996 Ford Explorer, made a left turn from Fleet Bank onto Queen Street and was traveling in the left northbound lane when he began turning right to enter the Newtown Color Center parking lot, police said. The Explorer then struck the vehicle of motorist Margaret Formato, 24, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 1999 Nissan Altima in the right northbound lane, police said.

There were no injuries in the crash. Police issued Perkins a written warning for making an improper right turn.

Mt Pleasant Road

Motorist Thomas Montague, 21, of 64 Osborne Hill Road, Sandy Hook, was driving a 1992 Chevrolet Cavalier eastbound on Mt Pleasant Road about 4:36 am January 27, when he failed to negotiate a curve in the road and went off the left side of the road, striking a tree, police said. The Chevrolet caught on fire, but police extinguished the flames, police said. The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Montague to Danbury Hospital for treatment of facial injuries, police said. Police said Montague failed to drive to the right on a curve.

 

Main Street Mishap

Motorist Brian S. Fromm, 40, of Danbury, who was driving a 1988 Mazda pickup truck on Main Street in front of Edmond Town Hall about 1:11 pm January 26, was waiting for a vehicle which was backing out of a parking space, when he was struck by another vehicle which was backing out of another parking space, police said.

The vehicle which struck the Mazda was a US Postal Service truck driven by Austin W. Fenn, 49, of Southbury, police said. There were no injuries.

Police issued Fenn a written warning for unsafe backing.

Route 6 Crash

A two-vehicle collision happened on Route 6 in the vicinity of Sawmill Road about 9 am January 27, according to police.

Eastbound motorist Adrienne Ventresco, 39, of New Milford, who was driving a 1993 Ford Explorer, was passing eastbound motorist William Farley, 49, of 51-A Botsford Hill Road, who was driving a 1985 Ford dump truck on the snow-covered roadway, police said.

As the Explorer was passing the dump truck, Ventresco lost control of the Explorer and struck the dump truck, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Ventresco a written warning for unsafe passing.

 

Botsford Rear-Ender

Motorist Jeannine M. Piselli, 23, of 60 Jeremiah Road, Sandy Hook, who was driving a 1995 Honda Accord northbound on South Main Street about 9:11 am January 26, stopped at a red light at the intersection of South Main Street and Botsford Hill Road and was then struck from behind by northbound motorist Aiesha M. Turpin, 23, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 1996 Dodge Caravan minivan.

There were no injuries in the crash, police said. Police issued Turpin a written warning for failure to drive reasonable distance apart.

Interstate Accident

Motorist Jonathan Brower, 16, of 6 Winding Brook Road, who was driving a 1989 Volkswagen sedan on the eastbound Interstate 84 Exit 10 on-ramp, failed to make a curve on the ramp due to excessive speed on the wet and sandy surface about 4:40 pm January 27, state police said.

The Volkswagen slid off the right side of the ramp, striking guardrailing, state police said. Brower was uninjured in the mishap. State police said Brower was driving at a speed too fast for conditions.

Highway Collision

Motorist Tom Doyle, 64, of Danbury was driving a Jeep westbound on Interstate 84 west of Exit 10 about 8:40 am January 22 when he stopped suddenly, resulting in the Jeep being struck from behind by motorist Stephanie A. McKenna, 21, of Attleboro, Mass., who was driving a 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue. There were no injuries.

State police said McKenna failed to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Stereo Theft

Police report that sometime between 2:30 and 5 pm January 29 someone broke the right rear window on a black 1994 Volkswagen Jetta sedan parked in the south parking lot of Big Y supermarket at 6 Queen Street and stole a Pioneer compact disc player and about 20 compact discs.

Police are investigating the case of fourth-degree larceny from the auto which is owned by a Brookfield resident. Anyone with information about the crime is asked to contact police.

 

Truck Theft

Police report that someone sometime between 3 pm January 26 and 12:50 pm January 29 stole a commercial 1986 GMC box truck owned by The Bee Publishing Company from the parking lot of the company’s printing plant on Commerce Road. Police are investigating the case of second-degree larceny.

Ambulance Accident

Police report that Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps driver Patrick C. Sturges, 21, of Danbury backed a 1998 Ford E-450 ambulance into an unoccupied 1988 Dodge Caravan, which was parked in the driveway of 117 Huntingtown Road about 11 am January 27. There were no injuries. No enforcement action was taken because the collision occurred on private property, police said.

Hawleyville Accident

Police report motorist Janet P. Lesperance, 30, of Brookfield, was driving a 1987 Chevrolet Blazer southbound on Route 25 in Hawleyville, about 1,000 feet north of Currituck Road, about 6 am January 31 when, while attempting to negotiate a curve in the road, the sport-utility vehicle hit some black ice and rolled over, went down an embankment, and entered a stream.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Ms Lesperance to Danbury Hospital for treatment of a head cut, police said.

Tricycle Collision

Police report that adult tricyclist William Ready, 61, of 12 Sunnyview Terrace, Sandy Hook, was traveling eastbound on Church Hill Road near the Housatonic Railroad overpass about 5:20 pm January 18 when he attempted to cross Church Hill Road, but in doing so he crossed in front of eastbound motorist A. Winthrop Ballard, 83, of 5 Papoose Hill Road, who was driving a 1992 Chevrolet Caprice.

The auto and the tricycle collided and Mr Ready tumbled over the handlebars, falling to the road, police said.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps went to the scene but Mr Ready refused transport to the hospital. He was treated at the scene for abrasions, police said.

Elm Drive Break

Police report a break-in on Elm Drive sometime between 7:30 am and 5 pm on January 26. Police ask anyone with information about the burglary to contact them.
