Wow, this week had it all.

There was a heavyweight battle on the pool deck, an overtime basketball thriller, a stunning rally (not to mention two marvelous moves) on the wrestling mat, a narrow win on the ice that had an impact on the state rankings and – yes, and – a tough basketball loss to an arch rival.

The swim meet between Newtown and Brookfield last Friday was probably the most anticipated contest of the week, but it never gets dull when Newtown meets Brookfield on the wrestling mat or when Newtown meets Masuk on the basketball court and all of that make for an exciting week in Newtown High School sports.

SWIMMING

Brookfield 99, Newtown 85

Newtown 102, Weston 84

It is the kind of meet that brings out the best in both teams – one thinking it has a chance to pull off a stunning upset and the other thinking it won’t allow that to happen.

There were a lot of great swims in both the even and odd lanes, but ultimately it was Brookfield which came away with a 99-85 win over the Newtown High School swim team last Friday in a South-West Conference showdown.

“We swam great all night,” said head coach Matt Childs, “but so did Brookfield. It was a legitimately fast meet.”

How fast?

Well, fast enough that a 52.87 is only good for fourth place in the 100 freestyle … fast enough that a 2:04.20 in the 200 individual medley (the third-best time ever recorded in the event) was only good for second place … and fast enough that Newtown’s 52.04 in the 100 freestyle tied for first (by rule) while it was technically second by 1/1,000th of a second.

That fast.

The Nighthawks went 1-3 in the 200 medley relay to take an early 10-4 lead, but then Stefan Toi was touched out by 4/100ths of a second in the 200 individual medley, the divers – despite much improved performances – were swept, and Luke Fiore was touched out by 1/1,000th of a second and Anthony Fiore was touched out by in the 100 freestyle by 4/100ths of a second.

It was after the 500 freestyle that the Bobcats had built up a 22-point lead and was able to coast home from there.

Luke Fiore (100 free) and Toi (100 breaststroke) earned the only first-place finishes for the ‘Hawks, but freshman Alex Kron (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle) had a couple of strong swims and finished second twice.

The loss snapped a three-meet winning streak, but the ‘Hawks quickly bounced back with a 102-84 win over Weston to push their record to 5-2. Another showdown – this time with New Fairfield – is coming up next Tuesday, in Newtown, with a 4 pm start time.

WRESTLING

Newtown 38, Brookfield 36

Pomperaug 44, Newtown 27

Newtown 46, Fitch 26

Newtown 54, Manchester 24

The Standing Head Granbys sounds like a great name for an alternative rock band (to borrow a popular turn of phrase by author Dave Barry), but a Standing Head Granby is actually an nifty little wrestling move that Jagi Gyamcho and John Gouveia both executed this past weekend to secure wins in a quad meet at Fitch High School.

The Standing Head Granby is a very complex move that actually requires a wrestler to stand up with his opponent behind him. Once the competitors are standing, the wrestler attempting the move must grab his opponent’s wrist and literally do a sideways flip in the air (almost like a cartwheel with no arms or legs) and land on the mat with his opponent on his back.

The Nighthawks defeated Fitch (46-26) and Manchester (54-24) while suffering a disappointing loss to Pomperaug (44-27) during the quad meet. With a stunning 38-36 win over Brookfield last Wednesday – in a match that went down to the final two weight classes – the locals improved to 8-8 overall, 5-3 in the South-West Conference.

With their performances at the quad meet, Gouveia pushed his personal record to 23-2 while remaining undefeated in the SWC. Joel Minalgo also remained undefeated in the SWC (generally wrestling in the 215-pound division) and boasts an overall mark of 19-5.

But the real thrills came last Wednesday, under the lights, at Newtown High when the ‘Hawks pulled off an improbable win over Brookfield. The locals were down 36-26 with two weight classes left, but knew that Gouveia would be uncontested at 119 pounds, which made the theoretical scored 36-32 in favor of the Bobcats.

When Tom Merrifield stepped on the mat at 112 pounds, it was with the knowledge that a simple three-point decision would not be enough – the ‘Hawks needed at least a technical fall (a win by 15 points or more) to win the match.

Merrifield did it one better. The sophomore wasted little time, pinning David Weinstock in 1:21 (the first pin of his career) to lift the ‘Hawks to the win.

The locals were in Stratford on Wednesday to face Stratford High School and will be back in Stratford next Wednesday to face Bunnell High School.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Newtown 77, New Milford 59

Newtown 62, Masuk 59

Last year these kinds of games would have slipped through their fingers.

Not this year.

The Newtown High School boys’ basketball team saw a seven-point, fourth-quarter lead dissipate in a crucial South-West Conference battle with Masuk on Tuesday night, but the Nighthawks were able to recover and – in overtime – came away with a 62-59 win to improve to 10-2 overall and 5-0 in the SWC.

It was Newtown’s second three-point win over Masuk and fifth game this year for the ‘Hawks decided by five points or fewer.

“It was a real nice win,” said head coach John Quinn. “Masuk is a quality team and beat them twice in one year is something.”

Mike Kennedy had a monster effort with 23 points and 24 rebounds as Kevin Troy canned 16 points and Joe DeVellis added 15 more – both striking twice from beyond the three-point arc. And in a close game where free throw shooting would be critical, the Nighthawks dropped in 24-of-33 (72.7%) with Kennedy hitting on 13-of-14 (giving him 24 makes in his last 26 attempts).

“Mike was pounding it and had a great game,” said coach Quinn. “He was playing like a man possessed.”

The win came on the heels of a 77-59 win over New Milford in which Kennedy scored 21 points and the ‘Hawks – dismal free throw shooters in the first month of the season – popped in 28-of-33 from the charity stripe to help put the game away.

Jake DeVellis dropped in 12 points and Joe DeVellis added nine.

On Friday, the ‘Hawks will continue to test their mettle when they host 10-2 Pomperaug. And next Tuesday, Brookfield will come to town.

ICE HOCKEY*

Newtown 2, New Fairfield 1

Last Friday night, the Nighthawks held on to beat New Fairfield, qualifying Newtown for the CIAC state tournament.

Just halfway through the season and already the Nighthawks have gone 8-2 with no signs that they may be slowing down.

With the anticipation of an easy win after their previous 7-2 win over the Rebels back on January 5, Newtown was stunned when the game turned into a close-fought battle. However, the competitiveness of it showed that the locals have the heart to hang on in close contests.

The first period began with back and forth play but neither team was able to do much offensively, turning the period into one highlighted by key stops from each goalie. Then, late in the first, junior Francis Oggeri blew through the New Fairfield defense and came up with a nice goal off the breakaway.

Coming into the second, Newtown knew it had to step it up in order to secure the win. Matt Wright did just that, scoring late in the second period to increase the lead to 2-0.

Greg Furtak of New Fairfield countered a few seconds later, cutting the lead to 2-1, but it was too little too late for the Rebels. The Nighthawk defense continued to play well and the offense – despite not scoring for the rest of the game – controlled the tempo well enough to secure the win and the state tournament bid.

The win also allowed the ‘Hawks to move atop the CIAC Division III rankings.

For a team that finished 5-12-3 last season, the kind of improvement they have shown in this first half of the season is astounding. As long as they keep it up, they’ll be tough to beat for any team they face.

INDOOR TRACK

With three new school records (one was, technically, tied) and the hope of more to come, the Newtown High School indoor track and field team is in a groove with the South-West Conference championships just a week away.

On the boys’ side, Cody Cullens set the long jump mark at 18-8 at Wesleyan University on January 13, snapping the seven-year-old record of 18-6 set by Reid Warner. Also, the 4x800 relay squad of Scott Nichols, Zack Schwartz, Charlie Baldour, and Eric Macknight re-broke the school record they set last with a new time of 8:37.4.

The boys also boast a bunch of SWC qualifiers – like Steve Ashbolt (55 dash, 300 dash), Cullens (55 dash, long jump), Ryan Morrissey (300 dash – with a team-best 39.6), Eric Thornberg (300 dash – with also a team-best 39.6), Brian Pennarola (300 dash), Scott Nichols (600, 1000), Charlie Baldour (1000, where he has a team-best 2:43), Eric Macknight (1000), Zack Schwartz (1000, 1600 – with a team-best 4:42, and 3200 – with a team-best 10:08), and Kevin Hoyt (1600 and 3200).

In preparation for the SWCs, the Nighthawks will be at the SCC Coach’s Invitational this weekend and that’s where the locals hope to top school marks in the 4x200, 4x400 and sprint medley relays.

On the girls’ side, last weekend Lauren Sudbey tied the school record in the pole vault at 7-6, equaling the mark set by Leah Herity, and that’s a record that could also be broken later. Sudbey has qualified for the SWC meet in the pole vault, long jump and 55 dash.

The team boasts a number of other SWC qualifiers – like Annika Garrett (55 dash), Sarah Grose (55 hurdles), Alison McEmber (300 dash – with a team-best 46.2, and 600 dash – with a team-best 1:48), Julie Landin (300 dash – with a team-best 46.2), Kelley Sullivan (300 and 600 dash), Elise DeRoo (1600), Michelle Brennan (3200 – with a team-best 12:40), Sara Pollock (3200) and Emily Lockhart (pole vault), Jaclyn Van Waalwijk (shot put).

Several girls are on the verge of also qualifying in the high jump.

The ‘Hawks will be looking for another solid showing at the SCC Coach’s Invitational this weekend and are particularly aiming at a school record in the 4x400 relay.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Newtown 53, New Milford 39

A strong performance against New Milford last Friday night gave the Newtown High School girls’ basketball team a little momentum heading into a key South-West Conference battle with Masuk on Tuesday night.

That, and the fact that the Lady Nighthawks topped the Lady Panthers back on December 19.

But fortunes took a turn this week when the Panthers got 12 points from Kelsey Johnson and 10 more from Karen Borrs to defeat the ‘Hawks, 49-40, and dropping the locals to 7-6 overall and 2-5 in the SWC.

Christie Iwanicki had another outstanding effort for the ‘Hawks, canning 20 points with the aid of two three-pointers but there was not enough offense to go around as Darcy Fiscella was the next highest scorer with eight markers.

The ‘Hawks were much more in control last Friday night when Iwanicki dropped 23 on the Green Wave and center Morgan Knees added 16 more with junior guard Katie Condon chipping in 10. The locals took a nine-point lead into halftime and held the Wave off from there.

A critical SWC battle with Pomperaug comes up on Friday night, in Southbury. The girls will then travel to Brookfield on Tuesday.
