Gymnasts, Cagers, And Swimmers Compete

Newtown High School’s gymnastics, basketball, and boys’ swimming and diving teams were all in action on January 26.

The gymnasts competed at Pomperaug High School in Southbury, and placed third among four teams. Oxford won with a team score of 123.350, Pomperaug was second with 120.700, narrowly edging Newtown with 120.250, and Nonnewaug scored 54 points.

Sammi Olah was third on the balance beam with a score of 8.75. Ally Kenny was sixth in the all around with a 32.45; she placed second on bars with an 8.2, sixth on floor with an 8.3, and scored an 8.15 on beam.

Cam Vazquez and Maddie Jannott tied for seventh on floor both with scores of 8.2. Vazquez had an 8.25 on vault and Jannott scored an 8.1 on vault.

Contributing to the team score was Taylor Krikorian on vault with a 7.5 and beam with a 7.1, Sarah MacMullan on floor with a 7.3, and Olivia Brosnan on beam with a 7.0. Also competing for Newtown was Alex Ferris on beam, Bella Manfredi on vault, and Amanda Brinkmann on floor.

Cagers Split With New Milford

The girls’ basketball team defeated host New Milford 46-28. Mali Klorczyk led the way with 14 points, Lauren Wilcox had nine, and Haley Ryan added seven. Olyvia Shaw and Klorczyk both had seven steals.

On the boys’ hardwood, the Nighthawks fell 59-41 to visiting New Milford. Dillon Palumbo had a dozen points, and Nevin Zink and Joe Duero added eight and six, respectively, for Newtown. Palumbo and Duero each hit a pair of Newtown’s six 3-pointers. Zink and Sam Duffy both pulled down eight rebounds, and Tom Cotton had three assists and four steals.

The boys were beaten 61-48 by visiting Bunnell of Stratford on January 22. Duffy poured in a team-high 16 points, Zink had nine, and Cotton scored eight, draining a pair of 3-pointers in the process. Evan Eggleston added five points. Zink had ten rebounds, Duffy had eight, and Mason Melillo and Palumbo combined for nine rebounds.

Swimmers Fall To Rebels

The swim team dropped a 103-82 decision at home to New Fairfield. The Nighthawks had the following first-place finishes: 200 yard freestyle: Chris Lafky; diving: Kyle Gaynor; 100 butterfly: Lafky; 100 freestyle: Tommy Horan; 500 free: Peter Fagerholm; 100 backstroke: Horan.

Second-place finishers are as follows: 200 medley relay: Horan, Caelan Ritter, Fagerholm, Owen Gray; 200 individual medley: Fagerholm; 50 free: Gray; 500 free: David Lawrence; 200 free relay: Xavier Williams, Ritter, Lafky, and Gray; 100 breaststroke: Ritter; 400 free relay: Lafky, Gray, Fagerholm, and Horan.
