Rolled Onto Roof

Newtown Police report Rebecca Villa, 51, of Bridgeport, operating a 2005 Toyota Camry, was traveling northbound on Toddy Hill Road at 5:59 am January 14. Villa’s vehicle crossed the centerline, rotated 180 degrees, and struck an embankment on the southbound shoulder of the roadway, rolling over and coming to a stop on its roof.

Villa was transported to Danbury Hospital with a suspected injury. The vehicle was towed.

Villa was issued a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Left Turn Collision

Newtown Police report Amanda DaCruz, 22, of Wareham, Mass., operating a 2010 Honda Civic, was traveling westbound on Mt Pleasant Road at 5:11 pm January 15. Eric Vandeweerdt, 19, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2015 Mercedes-Benz E3504m, was traveling eastbound on Mt Pleasant Road. DaCruz turned left onto Old Bethel Road in front of Vendeweerdt and the front of Vanderweerdt’s vehicle struck the passenger’s side of DaCruz’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

DaCruz was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way.

Struck Utility Pole

Newtown Police report Hassan Porter, 45, of Bridgeport, operating a 2021 Ford TCN, was traveling south on Dinglebrook Lane at 3:18 pm January 16. The weather was freezing rain and the road was heavily iced. While negotiating a down hill curve left, the vehicle crossed over the northbound lane of traffic and struck a utility pole.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.

Porter was issued a warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Rolled Vehicle

Newtown Police report Soto Brea, 30, of Brookfield, operating a 2007 Honda CR-V, was traveling southbound on Berkshire Road at 5:24 am January 17. While negotiating a left hand curve in the road, the vehicle slid off the roadway right due to ice, then crossed over the centerline and ran off the roadway left before striking an embankment and rolling over on its roof.

Brea was transported to Danbury Hospital with a possible injury. The vehicle was towed.

Brea was issued a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Assault Arrest

Newtown Police report George Geanuracos, 59, of Newtown, was arrested by warrant at approximately 12:15 pm January 17. The arrest stems from an investigation in which the accused allegedly assaulted another Newtown resident.

Geanuracos was processed on the charges of third-degree criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, and third-degree assault, and released after posting a $5,000 bond. He was given a court date of January 18 in Danbury Superior Court.

Three Vehicle Collision

Newtown Police report Grace Laguardia, 16, of Monroe, operating a 2020 Nissan Leaf, was traveling on Glover Avenue near the intersection with Queen Street at 2:53 pm January 17. Kevin Eppley, 30, of Monroe, operating a 2007 Toyota Tacoma, was traveling southbound on Queen Street. Priscilla Paixao-Souza, 39, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2017 Chevrolet Equinox, was traveling northbound on Queen Street. Laguardia entered onto Queen Street from Glover Street without yielding right of way, colliding with Eppley’s vehicle and pushing it into Paixao-Souza’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. All three vehicles were towed.

Laguardia was issued an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign and violation of passenger restrictions for 16- and 17-year-old drivers.

Following Too Close

Newtown Police report Carolanne Scinto, 20, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2014 Mazda CX-5 Touring, was traveling eastbound on Church Hill Road at 1:53 pm January 18. Diane Massafra, 61, of Shelton, operating a 2015 Cadillac ATS, was stopped in traffic eastbound on Church Hill Road, behind another vehicle waiting to make a left turn onto Walnut Tree Hill Road. Scinto was unable to stop in time and rear-ended Massafra’s vehicle.

Massafra reported a possible injury but was not transported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Scinto was issued an infraction for following too closely.

Parking Lot Fender Bender

Newtown Police report Louise Baker, 85, of Newtown, operating a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was backing out of a parking space in a lot on West Street at 2:08 pm January 18. Baker backed into the front of a 2006 Volvo S50 operated by Racquel Stedford, 28, of Waterbury.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

BMW Hits Mercedes

Newtown Police report Brian Wolanin-Villaneuva, 37, of Newtown, operating a 2023 BMW X5, was traveling westbound on Mile Hill Road at 6:44 pm January 18. He was traveling behind a 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 operated by Nancy White, 51, of Newtown. White came to a stop at a red light and Wolanin-Villaneuva did not stop in time, rear-ending her vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Wolanin-Villaneuva was issued an infraction for following too close.

DUI Arrest

Newtown Police report James Murphy, 34, of Newtown, operating a 2017 Jeep Patriot, was traveling eastbound on Button Shop Road at 8:23 pm January 21. Murphy’s vehicle went partially off the roadway and struck a guardrail, then continued partially off road and struck a concrete bridge wall. The vehicle continued eastbound and struck another guardrail at the intersection of Button Shop Road and Little Brook Road before continuing eastbound on Button Shop Road. The vehicle turned left at the intersection with Botsford Hill Road, and then continued northbound on Toddy Hill Road. The vehicle was found disabled in the area of 15 Berkshire Road.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.

Police arrested Murphy on the charges of evading responsibility for injury or property damage, illegal operation of a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and making an improper turn. He was released on a $2,000 bond with a court date of February 9.

Parking Lot Collision

Newtown Police report James Schettino, 65, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2011 Nissan Rogue, was stopped in the parking lot of 6 Queen Street, waiting to make a left turn. Lara Wheat, 44, of Newtown, operating a 2023 GMC Sierra, was driving northbound in the lot, approaching Schettino’s vehicle. Schettino started making a left turn and the right front corner of his vehicle hit the left side of Wheat’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.
