Sandy Hook DWI

Newtown police said they received a report from state police that a reckless and erratic driver had exited Interstate-84 at Exit 10 and traveled onto Church Hill Road about 10:30 am January 30.

Newtown police said they located the driver on Washington Avenue in Sandy Hook, and stopped him after a brief pursuit.

After investigating, Newtown police charged motorist Antony Atanquana, 25, of Warren with driving while intoxicated, engaging police in pursuit, and operating a motor vehicle without a license.

After processing the case, Newtown police released Atanquana on a $1,000 bond for a February 10 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

South Main Crash

Motorist Kevin J. Hayes, 31, of Waterbury was driving a 1990 Chevrolet Cavalier northbound on South Main Street about 1 pm January 30, when he failed to negotiate a curve in the road and went onto the northbound road shoulder, striking a stone wall and a utility pole, police said.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Mr Hayes to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said. Botsford firefighters went to the scene.

 Police issued Hayes an infraction ticket on a charge of making an improper turn.

Criminal Mischief

Police said they learned January 23 that someone had broken a padlocked door and entered a home being renovated on Aunt Park Lane, sometime between January 20 and 23. The site is posted against trespassing, police said.

Anyone with information about the case of criminal mischief and trespassing is asked to contact patrol officer Richard Robinson at the police station at 426-5841.

Pond Brook Accident

Motorist Kyle C. Coney, 17, of 46 Pond Brook Road was driving a 1996 Infiniti northbound on Pond Brook Road about 7 pm January 24 when he lost control of the vehicle and struck a culvert, police said.

Coney was not injured, police said. Police issued Coney a written warning for failure to keep to the right on a curve.

Hanover Collision

Motorist Jesse P. Weber, 16, of 62 of Robin Hill Road, who was driving a 1988 Chevrolet Corsica southbound on Hanover Road about noon January 23, failed to negotiate a curve and left the roadway, striking a utility pole, police said.

Weber was transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said. Police issued Weber an infraction ticket for making a restricted turn.

 

I-84 Crash

Motorist Frantz LaGuerre, 44, of Chicago, who was driving a 1986 Nissan coupe on westbound Interstate 84 about one mile east of Exit 11, lost control of the car on an icy and snowy roadway early on the morning of January 31 and swerved to the left, striking a guardrail, state police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued LaGuerre a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Buick Collision

Motorist Margaret A. Sommeling, 35, of Toms River, NJ, who was driving a 1993 Buick eastbound on I-84 about one mile west of Exit 9 about 1:45 am January 31, lost control and swerved to the right, striking a guardrail twice, state police said. The accident occurred during a snowstorm. State police issued Sommeling a written warning stating she was traveling too fast for conditions.

Two Trucks Collide

 Trucker Alfred D. Boucher, 29, of Waterbury was driving a 1991 Mack DM-600 garbage truck eastbound on I-84 east of Exit 11 about 6:20 am January 28 when the front wheel of the garbage truck fell off, causing it to hit a 1999 Mack tractor-trailer truck driven by James L. Morrissette, 51, of Fall River, Mass., state police said. There were no injuries.

Flying Ice

Motorist Pamela J. Leach, 41, of New Milford, was driving a 1998 Honda Accord eastbound on I-84 west of Exit 9 about 1:30 pm January 26 when the Honda was struck by a sheet of ice which flew off a westbound truck, state police said. There were no injuries.

 

Interstate Rear-Ender

Motorist Timothy E. Simmons, 35, of Naugatuck, who was driving a 1990 Mercury Sable station wagon westbound on I-84 west of Exit 9 about 7:45 am January 25, stopped for traffic and was struck from behind by westbound motorist Peter J. Spanedda, 37, of 8 Canterbury Lane, who was driving a 1998 Toyota Avalon sedan, according to state police. Mr Simmons reported neck pain, state police said. State police said Mr Spanedda was following too closely.

I-84 Saab Crash

Motorist Patricia Hatry, 73, of New York City, who was driving a 1999 Saab 93 sedan westbound on I-84 east of Exit 9 about 9:20 am January 25, struck the median guardrail, state police said. State police said Hatry was traveling too fast for conditions.

Three-Car Crash

Police report a three-car accident on Toddy Hill Road near Route 34 about 7:30 pm January 31.

Northbound motorist Eugene D. Brochu, 29, of Woodbury, who was driving a 1995 Jeep Sport, stopped to allow an ambulance to pass, police said. Northbound motorist Richard G. Evans, 58, of Southbury, who was driving a 1998 Acura Integra, stopped behind the Jeep, police said.

Northbound motorist Dan G. Wiedemann, 43, of 13 Clearview Drive, who was driving a 1997 Chrysler Cirrus, was unable to stop in time and struck the rear end of the Acura, pushing the Acura into the rear end of the Jeep, police said.

There were no injuries or enforcement actions.
