A Budget Concern: Are Volunteer Firefighters Being Protected?

To the Editor,

With the budget process well underway, I wish to mention an issue that deserves special attention as the budget is completed.

Recent articles concerning the safety of much of the equipment used by firefighters emphasizes PFAs (per- and polyfluoroalkyl compounds) and the danger they can present to those wearing and handling the turnout gear during training, cleaning and firefighting events.

I would hope that the town will assure funds that allow for the replacement of any equipment which exposes our volunteers and professionals to PFAs and sufficient funds to purchase quality gear which minimizes or eliminates exposure and proper maintenance processes or services which clean and preserve this equipment in a safe way.

We owe that to the men and women who volunteer their time in the challenging and dangerous work they do.
