Girls' Cagers Clinch SWC Berth

SWC seedings and matchups have been announced. No. 7 Newtown will visit No. 2 Pomperaug in the quarterfinals on Friday, February 19, beginning at 7 pm.

Newtown High School's girls' basketball team clinched a South-West Conference playoff berth with a 64-47 win at Stratford, in the regular-season finale, on February 16.

The Nighthawks opened up a 17-0 lead after one quarter of play and rolled to victory. They finish the season with an 11-9 overall mark; 7-6 in South-West Conference play.

Mali Klorczyk had a double-double as she dropped in 18 points to go along with ten rebounds. Lauren Wilcox had ten points and six rebounds, Nikki DaPra had nine points and six rebounds, Rylee Mulligan scored nine points and had four assists, and Haley Ryan scored eight points and had a trio of assists.

Newtown ended a five-game losing streak, which included a 49-29 setback at now 20-0 New Fairfield, on February 10, and a 37-34 loss at SWC Colonial Division champion Pomperaug of Southbury (15-4 overall), two days later.

Newtown will begin the playoffs on the road, on Friday, February 19, with a 7 pm tipoff. The Nighthawks expect to learn their seeding and opponent in the SWC quarterfinal round after the conclusion of Wednesday's games.
