Cecilia Beaux Talk At PAFA March 19

PHILADELPHIA, PENN. — “Out of the Background: Cecilia Beaux and the Art of Portraiture” will be the subject of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts’ Art-at-Lunch talk on American art and culture on Wednesday, March 19, from noon to 1 pm

Cecilia Beaux achieved a lifetime of success as an artist by eschewing the Victorian roles of wife and mother. She justified her career choice by noting that painting was a sacred art, requiring the sacrifice of marriage and family for women called to a profession. Tara Tappert, one of the country’s leading scholars on Beaux, discusses how Beaux’s artistic talent and professional ideology affected a lifetime of choices.

The academy is at 118-128 North Broad Street. For information, 215-972-7600 or www.pafa.edu.
