Schools Closed By Overnight Storm, Multiple Roads Closed

Newtown Public Schools will be closed today, Thursday, February 25.This story was updated at 8:45 am to include preliminary storm details.

The district initially announced a two-hour delay early Thursday morning, but later upgraded to a full-day closure because of power outages and obstructions on several roads around town.

A rain storm moved through the area during the overnight hours, carrying strong winds, thunder and lightning with it. Police and firefighters were dispatched to a number of areas within town on reports of trees falling, often taking wires with them. Multiple utility poles were also damaged in the storm, leading to a number of road closures including a section of Mt Pleasant Road near Taunton . Drivers on Thursday morning were being detoured over Currituck Road to avoid the Mt Pleasant area.

Partial or full road closures were also reported on Boggs Hill Road, Bradley Lane between Country Squire and Nutmeg Lane, Bonnie Brae, Castle Hill Road near Head O'Meadow, Cross Brook, Deep Brook Road between Brushy Hill and Point O'Rocks roads, Great Ring (near Camelot Crest, road is down to one lane, but open), Hatfield Road, Head O'Meadow Road (near Shepard Hill Road), Mountain Laurel Lane, Old Hawleyville Road, Parmalee Hill Road, Plumtrees Road, Poverty Hollow at Morris Road, Queen Street, Russet Road, and Schoolhouse near Edmond Road, Scudder Road, among others.

As of 8:30 Thursday morning, Eversource was reporting that of its 11,070 utility customers in Newtown, 873 - or 8% - were without power.  Across the state, the utility was reporting that 72,984 customers, or 6% of its customer base of 1.2 million, was without power at that hour.
