Bring About Change

To the Editor:

My name is Lori Amaral and my daughter Courtney struggles with a substance use disorder. I can now say this freely without feelings of shame or guilt. Courtney showed signs of anxiety and depression in her early teens in which we sought help. At that time she was diagnosed with body dysmorphia and anxiety. This was managed with medication and weekly therapy until it seemed no longer necessary. Years passed and when Courtney was 20 years old there would be a tragic event that, little did we know at the time, would put her on the road of addiction. That day was December 14, 2012, but it could have been any other traumatic event.

When I heard the word heroin it made me numb. I would remain this way while Courtney was fighting for her life. Being the parent of an addict is like riding a roller coaster that won't stop. I have found myself on this ride and have decided to do all I can to bring about change. The perception of substance abuse must change and we must demand adequate health care for those with the disease. We must also support families in crisis. I do this, not just for Courtney, but for those that have lost their battle.

Courtney is today clean and sober and doing what she can to help others. Please go to www.facingaddiction.org to see how you can join us in helping end this public crisis.

Kind regards,

Lori Amaral
