Firefighter Steve Stohl walks toward Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue’s brush truck on Monday, February 25, while on a call for wires down at 25 Zoar Road. During strong winds that morning, a tree limb had broken off, taking primary wires with it. A utility box on a garage at the property had its connection point pulled apart (inset), resulting in a small fire and then arcing. The roadway was closed until Eversource could respond to that location. Firefighters from all five of Newtown’s companies responded to similar calls for trees and/or wires down all day. A few roads were temporarily closed, but no injuries resulted from the incidents. Approximately 425 Eversource customers in Newtown were without power at 7 pm Monday, but the utility was able to knock that number down within a few hours.  (Bee Photo, Hicks; and (inset) Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue photo)
