NASA 'Discover Exoplanets' At C.H. Booth Library: Related Events

The following programs have already been scheduled in conjunction with “Discover Exoplanets,” a major exhibition opening this weekend at C.H. Booth Library. For full details, visit chboothlibrary.org/visit-us/nasa-exhibit-exoplanets/.

March Programs

*Saturday, March 9, at 4 pm: “SPACE Art Exhibit Opening Reception” at Art & Frame of Newtown, 77 Main Street, exhibit on view March 9-30, local artist work featuring space exploration, planets and the greater cosmos, all are welcome.

*Wednesday, March 13, at 6:30 pm via Zoom: Astrophotography I with Milford Public Library Information Systems Librarian Fred Danowski, learn how to safely and successfully produce astrophotos of quality and beauty, class followed by a Q&A, registration required for Astrophotography I and Astrophotography II (held on April 10 at 6:30 pm).

*Wednesday, March 13, at 6:30 pm via Zoom: Science Fiction Book Club: The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers, registration required.

*Friday, March 15, at 3:30 pm: Paper Circuits: Light Up Constellations Drop-In, explore the basics of electricity and conductivity with paper circuits, create a path for electrons to flow and watch as your paper constellation glows with light, recommended for ages 7-17.

*Wednesday, March 20, at 4 pm: Teen Beading Club: Galaxy Bracelets, relax and craft beautiful galaxy bracelets, all materials will be provided, no experience necessary, recommended for ages 10-17, registration full, waiting list available.

*Saturday, March 23, at 11 am-2:45 pm: Spring Constellations and Sky Lore, the Ridgefield High School Astronomy Club presents a spring season sky show in their portable StarLab planetarium, children ages 7 and up alongside their caregiver will learn how to identify bright stars and constellations, presentations start at 11 am, 1 and 2 pm, registration is required.

*Wednesday, March 27, at 4 pm: Upcycle Crafts: Moon Button Collages, transform loose, random buttons into a work of celestial art, all it takes is an embroidery hoop, blue cloth, a lot of buttons, and a bit of time, all materials provided, recommended for ages 10 and up, registration required.

*Thursday, March 28, at 7 pm via Zoom: NASA Speaker: Ravi Kopparapu Virtual Presentation, Kopparapu will showcase a presentation on the search for alien life (both biological and technological) in exoplanet research he has conducted over the past year, followed by a Q&A session, registration required, arranged by the NASA Speakers Bureau.

April Programs

*Tuesday, April 2, at 7 pm via Zoom: Exploring the Cosmic Frontier: Significance of Space Beyond our Solar Neighborhood, unravel the mysteries beyond the solar system, including nearby stars, exoplanets, and interstellar phenomena with presenter John Cilio, registration required.

*Wednesday, April 3, at 4 pm: Constellation Luminary Jars, details TBA.

*Sunday, April 7: Star Lab, details TBA.

*Monday, April 8: Solar Eclipse, details TBA.

*Wednesday, April 10, at 4 pm in person or via Zoom: Carm’s Kids Book Club: A Rover’s Story by Jasmine Warga, registration will begin Wednesday, March 13 at 9:30 am.

*Wednesday, April 10, at 6:30 pm: Astrophotography II with Milford Public Library Information Systems Librarian Fred Danowski, see March 13 details.

*Saturday, April 13, at 10 am: Saturday Science with Mr Nash: Learning to Fly! Learn about air pressure and the power of flight in a fun, hands-on interactive science adventure with Ridgefield Academy/Landmark Preschool Science Teacher Jerry Nash, for ages 4-6, registration required.

*Tuesday, April 16, at 2:30 pm: Docking With the ISS, design a spaceship and try to dock it safely using a rope, a buddy, and no hands, program recommended for ages 7-14, registration required.

*Friday, April 19: Space-Themed Trivia Night, details TBA.

*Monday, April 22, at 4 pm: Needle Felted Aliens With Katie Stevenson, come learn the art of needle felting using colored wool and a special needle, everyone will go home with a unique alien of their own; due to needles being used for this activity, program is for ages 10-17, registration required.

*Tuesday, April 23, at 2:30 pm: Homeschool CrafterNoon: Galaxy Jars, details TBA.

*Wednesday, April 24, at 5 pm: Author Visit: Branwen OShea, join for a special evening as Oshea, author of this month’s Science Fiction Book Club selection, The Calling, talks about her series, writing process, and the upcoming third book in the Finding Humanity series, evening will end with a Q&A and a book signing, stay after the event to join a book club discussion about The Calling, recommended for ages 13 and up, registration required.

*Thursday, April 25, at 7 pm via Zoom: NASA Speaker: Dana R. Louie Virtual Presentation, Louie will showcase a presentation that summarizes the work she has been doing this past year on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) exoplanet observations, followed by a Q&A session, arranged by the NASA Speakers Bureau, registration required.

*Saturday, April 27, at 2 pm: Cool-ology: Come Fly Away with Me, explore the amazing world of air, air pressure, gravity, and flight, investigate the discoveries behind the principles of gravity and flight and make flying inventions, for ages 7-11, registration required.

*Saturday, April 27: Polymer Clay Galaxy Earrings, details TBA.

*Tuesday, April 30, at 7 pm via Zoom: NASA Ambassador Bill Cloutier: Perils of Spaceflight, Cloutier will present a program that investigates the perils of spaceflight, and how their astronauts are trained to deal with and overcome them, followed by a Q&A session at the end, registration required.

*Wednesday, May 15, at 4 pm in person or via Zoom: Carm’s Kids Book Club: The Lion of Mars by Jennifer L. Holm, registration will begin on Wednesday, April 10, at 9:30 am.

*Thursday, May 16, at 7 pm via: Habitable Exoplanet Ethical Framework: Golden Rule with WCSU Climate Change Educator & Professor of Biology Dr Stephen (Mitch) Wagener, details TBA.

*Saturday, May 18, at 2 pm: Cool-ology: Outer Space Engineering and Design Lab, learn about the engineering design process, design and create a lunar lander, and then participate in a drag device challenge by creating a parachute prototype, for ages 7-11, registration required.

*Tuesday, May 21, at 7 pm: NASA Ambassador Bill Cloutier: History of Robotic Exploration on Mars & the Rovers, details TBA.

*Wednesday, May 29, at 6:30 pm: Science Fiction Book Club: Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir, registration required.

*Thursday, May 30, at 7 pm: NASA Speaker: Rosa Avalos-Warren Virtual Presentation, Avalos-Warren will speak about the Artemis Missions and the Artemis Accords as she advocates for the next generation — the Artemis generation — to pursue STEM careers and participate in outreach events that give back to the local and international community, followed by a Q&A, arranged by the NASA Speakers Bureau.
