Absentee Ballots Available For Community Center Referendum

A referendum for registered Newtown residents, to vote on the question "Shall the $14,550,000 special appropriation and $5,000,000 bond authorization for the planning, design, and construction of a Newtown Community Center be approved?," has been scheduled for Tuesday, April 5. The referendum will take place from 6 am until 8 pm in the gymnasium of Newtown Middle School, 11 Queen Street.here. In addition to registered residents, pursuant to Connecticut General Statutes Sec. 7-6, any person who is a US citizen assessed for at least $1,000 for Real Estate or Motor Vehicles on the 2014 Grand List for the Town of Newtown is qualified to vote at the referendum.

Town Clerk Debbie Aurelia Halstead announced this week that absentee ballots will be available for the referendum during regular hours for the Office of The Town Clerk: Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4:30 pm. The town clerk's office is within Newtown Municipal Center, 3 Primrose Street.

In addition, The Town Clerk's office will have Special Absentee Voting Hours Saturday, April 2, from 9 am to noon.

Any qualified person who meets any of the following criteria may vote by absentee ballot: active service in the Armed Forces; absence from the Town during all the hours of voting; illness; physical disability; religious tenets which forbid secular activity on the day of the referendum; or duties as a Referendum official at a polling place other than their own during all hours of voting.
