The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) will have an oil painting demonstration by nationally known artist Kathy Anderson at its next meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, March 25, beginning at 1:30 pm. The demonstration, which is free and open to the public, will take place in the lower level of Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street.

Kathy Anderson began her formal training in commercial art but quickly found it too confining. Experimenting with styles and mediums, she gravitated toward her garden and produced distinctive and sought after floral watercolors.

Circumstances found her casually involved in painting sets for small theater productions. Working on such a large scale eventually led to a successful mural career.

Ms Anderson finally made her way back to easel work and fell in love with the range of expression and luminosity afforded by oils.

In 2001, she had the good fortune to meet Richard Schmid when he purchased one of her paintings.  The meeting resulted in her being invited to join The Putney Painters under Mr Schmid’s tutelage. For the past ten years she has traveled to Vermont several times a month to paint with Mr Schmid, Nancy Guzik, and fellow Putney Painters.

A frequent award-winner Ms Anderson recently received signature membership in Oil Painter of America and Allied Artists. She won numerous awards in 2013, including top prize from Salmagundi Club in New York City and the Impressionist Award of Excellence from Oil Painters of America.

Ms Anderson is represented by Susan Powell in Madison; Greenhouse Gallery, San Antonio, Texas; Legacy Gallery, Scottsdale, Ariz.; and Tree’s Place, Orleans, Cape Cod, Mass.

Reservations are not required for SCAN programs, but additional information is always available by contacting Ruth Newquist at 203-426-6654.
