ELISE FREDA ‘DESIRE OF THE LINE’ AT CH’I CONTEMPORARY FINE ART

ak/gs set 3/26 #733587

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Ch’i Contemporary Fine Art announces “Desire of the Line” by Elise Freda will be on view April 10–May 5. This is the artist’s second solo exhibition at Ch’i and will feature her recent works on paper as well as her encaustic paintings.

On Friday, April 11, there will be a reception for the artist from 6 to 9 pm at the Williamsburg gallery, 293 Grand Street, between Roebling and Havemeyer.

Freda abstracts the rural habitat that surrounds her home in the Catskills into poetic metaphors in her encaustic paintings, which combine layers of wax and oil to create abstract images combining gesture with geometry to evoke nature. Defining space with her use of lines, the layers of acrylic and encaustic are translated into imagery that is graceful and calligraphic, frenetic and drippy, enabling the painting to become whatever it wants to be.

Freda has been developing and exhibiting her paintings since 1990. Her works have appeared in both group and solo shows throughout the Eastern United States at such places as the Randall Beck Gallery in Boston, Stephen Haller Gallery in New York, the Lorraine Kessler Gallery in Poughkeepsie, the Banana Factory in Pennsylvania, The Delaware Arts Center, the Amarillo Museum of Art, Binghamton University and Skidmore College, among others.

She has been reviewed and featured in The New York Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Brooklyn Rail, Poughkeepsie Journal, Art New England, The Peterborough Transcript, Taconic Newspapers, Herald Record, The River Reporter, Woodstock Times, The Boston Globe, and The Milford Cabinet.
