I understand that the Nunnawauk Meadows Residents Association recently sponsored a gathering to honor former executive director Linda Manganaro for her years of service, and Art Monsanto, who has retired from his position as maintenance supervisor at the independent living facility. We wish the very best to Linda and Art! The Newtown Bee and read it immediately, those who do so will be in on special plans for extra movies at Edmond Town Hall this weekend. The action-adventure-comedy Jumanji: Welcome to The Jungle will be the featured film for March 30 to April 4, and there are two extra screenings that first day. Local audiences can take in a 1 pm or 4 pm show on Good Friday. Full details are on our online calendar page (www.newtownbee.com/calendar), which includes the full screening schedule and brief synopsis of the Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillen film released in December. Having said all this, please also note that the town hall will not be screening any movies on Sunday, April 1. The building will be closed for Easter Sunday.www.newtownbee.com; some beautiful options have been presented by The Art Spot owners Joanne and Bruce Hunter. He gave it to Linda, since he knew she works here, and we make a guess that it is probably from the 1970s. Now there was someone with a love for community news!

Need a laugh? Louise Baker shared this seasonal joke with me: "What do you get when you pour hot water down a rabbit hole? You get a very hot cross bunny!" Thanks for a chuckle, Louise, and now I'm hungry for my Easter hot cross buns. (But please, please... don't pour any water into a bunny's home!)

So what kind of cake does one share with a horse on its birthday? Carrot cake, of course! And that's what Tess Vogel did this Sunday, when her horse, Elliot, reached his fifth birthday. The Sandy Hook resident took a small carrot cake with her when she visited her horse that afternoon. Elliot was underwhelmed, unfortunately. "I gave him a piece, and he just pushed it around a little," she said.

Speaking of last Sunday, we were very impressed to learn that the agenda posted last week for a Legislative Council Municipal Operations Committee meeting did not include a typo. The group has reportedly been having such a difficult time getting all of its members in one room lately - snowstorms on top of already busy schedules could not have helped - that when it was discovered that a Sunday afternoon was the only time everyone could meet, that's exactly what happened. The LC Municipal Operations Committee convened at 4 pm Sunday at Edmond Town Hall. These residents not only volunteer to serve our community, but this was an occasion where they really went above and beyond.

Next week you can see photographs by Newtown residents Rhonda and Chane Cullens, on view at the Newtown Municipal Center, 3 Primrose Street, through April 30. The more than 250 photos are "Capturing Newtown And Our World," and are sure to capture your attention. The Municipal Center is open 8 am to 4:30 pm, weekdays.

There's not much time left - only until 1 pm on Monday, April 2 - for senior citizens to cast their votes on the theme of the tile mural that will become part of the new senior center at Fairfield Hills. Check out the story about the mural elsewhere in this week's paper for details, or at

The Resiliency Center of Newtown (RCN) will be re-establishing its monthly coffee hour next week. On Wednesday, April 4, the RCN will host the tapping practice for an intro to EFT tapping for families. Learn how simple EFT Tapping is and how it can help your family cope with daily life. Longtime Newtown Historical Society member Gordon Williams has someone in mind who is a Good Egg. "Recently," Gordon says, "Holly Kocet joined the Newtown Historical Society Board. She will be in charge of membership. In addition, she is the mastermind behind the beautiful garden she designs and maintains behind the historic Matthew Curtiss House. If that weren't enough she is very active in the Garden Club of Newtown, serving recently as president. And I just learned that she is the chairman of the Newtown Conservation Commission. Wow! In my salad days I couldn't beat that for volunteering." I have to agree: Holly, you are deserving of our Good Egg Award!

Speaking of eggs... Women Involved in Newtown (WIN) members worked at Mandy Monaco's home on Monday night, filling Easter baskets for the group's annual project to make the holiday brighter for dozens of people. By the end of the gathering, the ladies had assembled 200 baskets. Within days, the baskets were distributed to Newtown Social Services, AIDS Interfaith Ministry in Danbury, Harmony House in Danbury, and Newtown Congregational Church, according to Mandy. The club does fundraising during the year to cover the cost of much of the candy that goes into the baskets. Stuffed animals that went into many baskets this year were donated by Middle Gate School, also according to Mandy.

Dorrie Carolan was passing by Dere Street Restaurant on Main Street recently, when she caught a glimpse of the photo shoot for the business' new catering menu - and got to drool over some splendid-looking beef tenderloin crostini, we hear.

Don't forget that the Girl Scout Troop 50611 Dance Shoe and Instrument Drive continues through April 30. Donations can be dropped off at Dance Etc, 117 Mt Pleasant Road; Graceful Planet, 7 Berkshire Road; Newtown Centre of Classical Ballet & Voice, lower level 87 South Main Street; or Lathrop School of Dance, 45 Main Street.

Happy Easter to all who celebrate this season on April 1 - and I'm not fooling. Nor am I fooling when I tell you I'll be hopping down the bunny trail and anywhere else to gather news about town. Be sure next week to... Read me again.

This special license plate was found during a garage clean up, and most likely dates from the 1970s.
WIN is thrilled to have supplied families with Easter baskets, once again.
Elliot the horse celebrated his fifth birthday with - what else? A carrot cake.
