For three decades, Gregg Simon has been involved with Newtown's school district - the last 17 years as athletic director at Newtown High School, during which time he has spent much time at the school and town athletic facilities making game days run smoothly for all of Newtown's freshman, junior varsity, and varsity squads almost daily during the school year.

Once this spring campaign wraps up, Mr Simon will have spent his final days working to make game days possible, and successful, for the Nighthawks.

Mr Simon, 56, is stepping down.

"I am resigning my position as Newtown High School athletic director because I am physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausted. I have loved my time in Newtown, which has become my second home, and I am looking forward to the next chapter in my life," Mr Simon, a Stratford resident, said in a statement to The Bee on Wednesday.

Mr Simon began his career as a teacher at Newtown Middle School. He coached girls' basketball at Newtown High before becoming athletic director.

Newtown High has 48 combined freshman, JV, and varsity teams, in addition to Unified Sports teams. The high school is also a host venue for South-West Conference and state tournament games - some involving, others not including, Newtown High teams.
