STAMFORD - The Connecticut Westchester Hudson Valley Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) has named two honorees for its 2016 Fairfield County Light The Night Event.lightthenight.org/ctwhv.

Light The Night Events raise funds to support blood cancer research and provide services to patients and their families. Each event honors local blood cancer survivors and commemorates individuals who have lost their lives to these diseases.

During this event, participants carry illuminated lanterns - white for survivors, red for supporters, and gold in memory of loved ones lost to blood cancer. The 2016 Fairfield County Event will take place on Saturday, October 29, at Harbor Point Commons Park in Stamford.

The 2016 Event Honoree is Michael Zuccaro of Ridgefield.

Mr Zuccaro knew something was wrong when bruising appeared on his body that wouldn't go away. After blood tests, he was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), one month before his daughter was born.

During his two weeks of hospitalization, Mr Zuccaro's wife, Jennifer, stayed in the hospital with him while they waited for the birth of their daughter, Natalie.

After eight months of treatment, Mr Zuccaro was declared cancer-free. He celebrated his first year anniversary of being in remission in January 2016.

Kyle Markes has been named as the 2016 Light The Night Fairfield County In Memory Honoree.

Kyle lived in Stamford and attended New Canaan Country School. He was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and for well over a year was extraordinarily brave until he died on December 24, 2013.

Kyle was a member of Jack & Jill of America, Stamford/Norwalk chapter; First United Methodist Church Children's Choir; Stamford Football; Stamford Youth Soccer; Stamford Youth Basketball; and Go-Kart Racing School Grand-Prix.

He was known for his heartwarming personality and smile, and was called "The Mayor" by his nurses at Yale.

Kyle also loved music, basketball, dancing, and singing. He is remembered and honored each year via the Kyle Markes Humanitarian award through The Stamford Peace Basketball Association and by Kyle's Court, a playground for students at New Canaan Country School.

Light The Night Events bring light to the darkness of cancer through hope, research, and support for patients, families, friends, doctors, nurses, researchers, colleagues, and caregivers.

Registration for the regional event October 29, along with other events being held this year in Connecticut and Westchester County, is now open at
