Emergence Of Middle Hitters Helping Nighthawk Spikers Continue Winning Ways

Newtown High School’s boys’ volleyball team carried a 5-0 mark into Wednesday’s visit to Masuk of Monroe.

A big part of the continued success of the Nighthawks, undefeated last regular season on the way to a South-West Conference championship, is the team’s height in the middle. A question mark coming into the campaign with the loss of two senior middle hitters, the Nighthawks have not missed a beat.

“I’m very happy,” Coach Sandy Doski said of the team’s start. “They’re playing well together. We’ve got a few people in different positions.”

Zach Marks has stepped up to play the middle, and Robert DiSibio — new to the sport and a standout basketball player — stepped in to fill one of the voids. Danny Schrieber plays in the middle, and this trio gives the Nighthawks some depth in a position that lost much of its strength from a year ago.

“Between the three of them rotating in and out, we’re finding a nice mix to keep our middle intact,” Doski said.

Of course, returnees in other spots on the floor are instrumental to the team’s winning ways.

“The nice thing about our team is when one person is faltering, I’ve got somebody else to pick up the slack. We really compliment each other in the positions, and I feel that is what is continuing our winning streak,” Doski said.

Newtown, following a 3-2 win over Darien in the season opener, has beaten four straight opponents in the minimum three games.

In a 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-16) win over visiting Oxford on April 8, Ardi Kodzodziku had 16 kills, six digs, and two blocks; Robbie Morrill logged 15 kills, seven digs, and two aces; Max Wrage registered 19 assists, ten service points, and three aces; and Eric Moore compiled 16 assists, 14 service points, and six digs.

The Nighthawks visited Xavier of Middletown on April 5 and won 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-14). Kodzodziku tallied 14 kills, seven service points, and four digs; Wrage had 15 assists, 15 service points, seven digs, and five aces; Moore had six digs, 11 assists, and ten service points; and Schreiber had a trio of kills and two blocks.

Newtown defeated host Joel Barlow of Redding 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-22). Kodzodziku had 16 kills and 12 digs; Morrill compiled 14 kills, six digs, and seven service points; Wrage had 23 assists, 11 digs, and 11 service points; and Moore had 15 assists, nine service points, and eight digs.

Following the Masuk match, the Nighthawks continue road tilts as they visit Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport on Monday, April 15, at 5:30 pm and go to Danbury on Wednesday, April 17 for a 4 pm match. The team returns home on Thursday, April 18, to play Trumbull at 6 pm.
