Newtown High School's girls' lacrosse team defeated visiting Hall of West Hartford 15-10 on April 9, then toppled visiting Stratford, 15-3, on April 12. With the wins, both of which came at Blue & Gold Stadium, the Nighthawks improved to 3-1 heading into a Thursday, April 14, visit to Staples of Westport, beginning at 4 pm.

Against Hall, the Nighthawks led 6-3 at the half and scored nine of the 16 combined second-half net-finders to come out on top.

Coach Amanda Mastera said her team's transition game was unstoppable in the midfield, leading to the victory.

"We've practiced intensely on our midfield transition and domination on the draw this week. It was beautiful seeing it all come together in today's competition. Every one of my players gave it their all today. Our defense did an amazing job shutting down their speed on attack and our goalie Tess (Davenport) had a superior game."

Alex Futterman had four goals and an assist, Nevan Gattey tallied three goals and a trio of assists, Charli Condon, Julia Sughrue, and Keeley Kortze all scored twice, Julia Wiberg had a goal and an assist, and Brianna Scalfani added a goal. Davenport made ten saves.

In the Stratford game, Newtown jumped ahead 13-1 by halftime and coasted to victory. All 22 players got onto the field and ten of them scored goals. Sughrue had a hat-trick, Futterman tallied two goals and a pair of assists, and Condon and Olivia Hage both added two net-finders. Wiberg, Emily Dirga, Jessica Maturo, Hana Rosenthal, Lindsey Merrifield, and Danielle Samson also scored.

Opening up a large lead enabled Newtown to give the up-and-coming players more varsity experience than they might otherwise receive. This stands to benefit them and, in turn, the team, in the long run.

"We have a younger team in general. The more we can get the newer players out on the field in game situations the better they're going to play under pressure," Mastera points out.
