Track And Field Team Defeats Three Schools In Season-Opening Meet

Newtown High School's girls' track and field team, on April 10, completed a meet that started the day before but was halted by lightning and rain. Newtown defeated Notre Dame-Fairfield 150-0, Weston 91-59, and Joel Barlow of Redding 112-35, at Blue & Gold Stadium.

Freshman Elise Baricelli won the 100 meter dash in a time of 13.01 seconds, qualifying her for the state championships. She also qualified in the 200 with an impressive time of 25.9. Baricelli helped the 4x400 relay (also comprising Carly Sweirbut, Ally McCarthy, and Kathryn Garner) and 4x100 (made up entirely of freshmen; Riley Shelton, Bridget Lovely, and Reagan Schoen) qualify for states.

Swierbut won both the 400 (57.56) and the 200 (24.9) where she qualified in each for states. 24.9 and 57.56. Swierbut also qualified in the long jump in her debut appearance with a state qualifying mark of 15-foot-10.

Vicky Moran (28.7) and Katie Garner (28.3) both has impressive 200 times, qualifying for the South-West Conference championship.

Sarah Tressler, in her first showing in the 300 hurdles, qualified for the SWC tournament with a time of 53.0.

Katie Ryan won pole vault and qualified for states with a vault of 9 feet.

Sarah Nowacki won shot-put throw with a toss of 28.9 and, and the discus event with a throw of 91-1, and came in third in the javelin with a throw of 100-2. She qualified for states in both discus and javelin competitions.

Newtown had the top four finishers in the two-mile run. Emily Tressler won in 12:19.00 and qualified for states. Courtney Henchcliffe was second in 12:37.4, Hallie Filan third in 13:01, and Gloria Rowley fourth with a time of 13:19.3

The 4x800 relay of Maddie Fetchick, Alexandra Toth, Emily Tressler, and Laura Wong also qualified for the state competition with a time of 10:24.13.

Ally McCarthy won the mile and qualified for states with an impressive 5:37 coming back from injury.

Juliette Cryder (4-10) and Amy Sapenter (4-8) both qualified in the high jump for the state championships.
