Independent Living Day Returns April 23; Volunteers & Homeowners Sought

Newtown Youth & Family Services will sponsor the ninth annual Independent Living Day on Saturday, April 26. Newtown Youth & Family Services sponsors Independent Living Day to provide help to senior citizens with projects requiring physical assistance.

From 9:30 am until 3 pm that day volunteers will visit the homes of Newtown senior citizens who could use some help with their spring cleaning chores. Duties range from painting, yard work, and gardening to window washing, installing screen windows, and other indoor duties, or even running errands.

Volunteers are needed to do this light-duty work. Shifts are broken into morning and afternoon hours, so teens and families can also request to work during the time that is more convenient for them.

“This day of volunteering is a wonderful opportunity for families to work together on something meaningful,” suggested Sheila Russo, the operations manager at NYFS.

Last year more than 50 homes were brightened thanks to the volunteer efforts of about 70 volunteers who ranged in age from 2 to 67.

To volunteer or for additional information about Independent Living Day, contact Newtown Youth & Family Services at 270-4335 or visit the NYFS office at 17 Church Hill Road.

Senior citizens who would like the have volunteers visit them on April 26 are also encouraged to contact NYFS, again either with a phone call or a visit to the office. Those who are looking for help should contact NYFS by Monday, April 21.
