Moments after the May 21 South-West Conference tournament boys’ lacrosse semifinal game ended, Newtown Coach Scott Bulkley was anxiously awaiting his team’s Class L state playoff opener.

How much?

“I’d like to practice right now,” Bulkley said shortly before the lights shut off after his team was upset by Weston in a 13-4 loss at Blue & Gold Stadium.

The second-seeded Nighthawks were tied 3-3 in the first half with the third-seeded Trojans before the visitors went ahead 7-4 at halftime and scored ten of the last 11 goals to pull away.

“Sometimes you don’t play well. Tonight, we didn’t play good offense, we didn’t play good defense, and we didn’t do a good job on faceoffs,” Bulkley said. “They capitalized on our mistakes and then they outplayed us.”

Newtown, which went 9-1 in conference play, handed Weston one of only two SWC defeats in the regular slate with a 9-5 triumph back on April 16.

The four goals Newtown scored in the rematch were a season-low in SWC games. The dozen surrendered were the most since top-seed New Fairfield put 17 on the scoreboard in early May. Glastonbury netted 12 versus the Hawks, and every other opponent was held to single digits.

Weston won 12 of 19 faceoffs and controlled the play for much of the night.

Aiden Coleman scored twice, and Tucker Garrity and Jeffrey Garrity each scored once and added an assist.

Goaltender Jake Dandrea made seven saves. Andre Sokk led Newtown in the ground ball department with five scoops.

Newtown will try to bounce back when the state tournament playdowns take place on Saturday, May 25. Official seedings and matchups have yet to be announced, but the Hawks anticipate a home matchup with Brien McMahon of Norwalk. The winner will play in the first round, on Wednesday, May 29.

“I expect us to come out and play better on Saturday,” Bulkley said.
