WESTON — Numerous personal records and several school marks were set, and a new meet standard was established by Newtown High School athletes in the South-West Conference championship meet, at Weston High on May 22.

The girls’ squad, which went unbeaten in the regular season, came in second to Weston. Newtown scored 119.50 points; Weston had 152.

In the boys’ competition, the Nighthawks came in seventh with 40, and Weston won with 142.

Carly Swierbut had a stellar performance. She was a part of Newtown’s first place, school record-setting 4x100 meter relay squad, and broke the school mark in the 100 with a time of 12.20 seconds. The record had stood since 1999. Swierbut also bested the meet record in the 200, coming across the finish line in 25.37. In another event win, Swierbut led the way in the 400, clocking in with a time of 57.91. Swierbut holds six school records.

Sarah Nowacki won the shot-put and discus competitions. Nowacki threw the shot-put 34-02.25 feet and tossed the discus 103-07. Anna Burns was second in the discus throw with a 99-07, and fourth in the shot-put event with a 31-08.25.

Burns was fourth in the javelin throw with a distance of 98-10.

The 4x100 relay consisted of senior Brianna Lovely, freshmen Elise Barricelli and Regan Schoen, and senior Swierbut, and finished with a time of 49.74 seconds.

Coach Becky Knapp noted that it was impressive to see two first-year high school athletes and two seniors come together to set the record.

Newtown’s 4x400 relay, consisting of Sophia Guevara, Laura Wong, Kathryn Garner, and Amelia Daly, was fifth in 4:15.34.

The 4x800 relay team of Sophia Guevara, Maddie Fetchick, Ally Toth, and Ally McCarthy was sixth in 10:06.

Barricelli came in fourth in the 200 with a time of 26.19. McCarthy was third in the 800, finishing the race in 2:20.15. Karsen Pirone placed fifth in the 300 hurdles in 51.22.

Katie Ryan placed third in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 9 feet.

Amy Sapenter was fifth in the triple jump with a 32-05.50, and fifth in the high jump with a leap of 4-10.

Newtown won a trophy for its first-place regular season and also took home some hardware for the runner-up finish in the conference championships.

Settling for second might not have been the outcome the Nighthawks were hoping for, but there were a lot of PRs and improved seeding for the upcoming state championships, Knapp said.

In the boys’ meet, Justin Halmose won the 3200 in a time of 10:08.03.

The 4x800 team of Halmose, Evan Hildenbrand, Nick Jacobs, and Andrew Poseno was second in 8:30.40.

Aiden Jasinski earned third in the pole vault with a 12-06.

Personal records were set by Neil Coppola in the 100 (11.51) and 200 (23.72), Tristan Andrew in the 200 (23.10, eighth), Thomas Hartley in the 110 hurdles (15.90, seventh place), and Miles Martiska in the long jump (20-01.75, ninth).

“SWCs is a really exciting meet. It really shows how hard everyone has been working this year. Some kids rise to the occasion and the level of competition, and other kids hopefully are using it as a learning tool for next year,” said Becky Osborne, head coach of the boys’ squad.
