Host Greenwich High School's boys' lacrosse team ended a memorable spring season for Newtown High with a 20-6 win in the Class L state tournament qualifying round on May 28.

The No. 14 Cardinals (who went 9-6 during the regular season) advance to face third-seeded Glastonbury in the first round; the No. 19 Nighthawks (8-8), who won the South-West Conference tournament championship on May 26, saw their season come to a close.

Matt Meyers and Layton Harrell both scored twice, and Jared Pearson and Evan Eggleston also scored for the Nighthawks. Tucker Garrity had two assists, and Elliot Gregory, Steve Faxlanger, Meyers, and Pearson all added one assist.

"I think they played well. They just ran into a team that was a little hotter than we are right now," Newtown Coach Scott Bulkley said. "I'm proud they didn't give up."

This game was a reunion of sorts for Bulkley and the Greenwich Cardinals whom he coached for six seasons.

"I have a very good affinity with these kids right here, and also with my own guys," Bulkley said. "Hopefully Greenwich goes on to win everything because they're a great group of kids."

Bulkley, of course, wanted his squad to win. Despite the outcome, he's pleased with what the Nighthawks accomplished this campaign.

"From where we started to where we finished it was a huge change," said the first-year Nighthawk coach, who inherited a lineup that lost a majority of its starters to graduation last year. "I think they've become smarter lacrosse players."
