Children’s Book Sale Ties Into Summer Reading

In conjunction with the C.H. Booth Library Children’s Department summer reading program, “Choose Your Own Adventure — Read,” Friends of the C.H. Booth Library will present the annual Children’s Book Sale, Wednesday, June 25, from 9:30 to 3 pm, in the lobby of the library near the Children’s Department. Very gently used, preschool to young adult literature will be available for sale, said Friends’ spokesperson Denise Kaiser, with an emphasis on early readers.

“We have some lovely, lovely picture books available,” said Ms Kaiser of the hundreds of titles that will be available for sale that day. “We will also have workbooks for keeping up school skills over the summer, and great books for vacation travel,” she added. Puzzle books, game books, and other activity books can make a long trip seem shorter, as can the many enjoyment reading books for young readers.

“We try to have the popular longstanding series books for sale, too,” said book sale volunteer Pat Marshall. “Those are books by authors like Mary Osborne, Beverly Cleary, and J.K. Rowling. Kids will find the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boy mysteries, the Junie B. Jones series, Nate the Great, and Lemony Snickett books, and we have a number of the American Girl books, as well,” said Ms Marshall. All of the books offered for sale are donated, but many are in practically new condition, Ms Marshall said.

While parents mull over the adult selections of “light, fun summer reading” that will also be available for purchase that day, children can take part in one of two special summer reading program kickoff shows, one at 11 am and one at 1 pm, in the Children’s Department.

Full Effect Productions will present a fun-filled show of magic, juggling, and comedy, geared toward the 4-year-old to grade five levels that are invited to sign up for “Choose Your Own Adventure.” Because seating for the shows is limited, parents and caregivers must pick up tickets the morning of June 25 only at the Children’s Department main desk.

The summer reading program encourages independent reading and offers young readers the chance to travel in their imaginations and win great prizes through reading.

“We’re really pleased with the selection of books we will be offering at the sale,” said Ms Kaiser. “It’s a great time to pick up a book for the kids, and pick one up for mom or dad, too.”
