OUTSIDE IN AT YALE avv/lsb set 1/11/08 #725336

NEW HAVEN, CONN. — The Yale University Art Gallery will present “Outside In: The Photographs of Abelardo Morell,” June 24–August 10. “Outside In” presents more than 30 of Morell’s photographs and also features a special project in which part of the gallery’s exhibition space is transformed into a camera obscura.

Morell creates camera obscura rooms by blocking out all light with the exception of a small opening. As light enters through the opening, an inverted image of the exterior world is projected onto the opposite wall. He photographs the projected image with the use of a long exposure, capturing the superimposed visual realities of inside and out. Like Morell’s other photographic series of books, maps and works of art, these images transform the familiar into something extraordinary and strange.

The exhibition is organized by Anna Hammond, deputy director for programs and public affairs, and Christine Paglia, the Florence B. Selden curatorial intern in the department of prints, drawings and photographs.

The gallery is at 1111 Chapel Street (at York), fourth floor. For information, www.artgallery.yale.edu or 203-432-0600.
