A 64-year-old male pedestrian was killed Tuesday morning due to injuries he received when hit by a traveling vehicle at an Interstate 84 off-ramp, state police said.

Deceased is Gerard M. Mauskapf of Red Hook, Dutchess County, N.Y.

State police said that at about 8:55 am, Mr Mauskapf, who had been driving a mid-size 2014 Ford Fusion sedan, pulled over to the right road shoulder on a sweeping right curve on eastbound I-84's Exit 11 off-ramp, after which he got out of the Ford.

Motorist Michael Alan Vitti, 18, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a compact 2007 Subaru Impreza 2.5-i, which was approaching the parked Ford, then struck the Ford and Mr Mauskapf, state police said.

Mr Mauskapf, who sustained serious injuries, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services personnel, state police said.

Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company members, the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and a paramedic responded to the incident.

A state Department of Transportation crew went to the scene to shut down the eastbound Exit 11 off-ramp, which remained closed for several hours while the on-scene police investigation was underway. That ramp has been reopened to traffic, state police said.

The accident remains under investigation. State police ask any witnesses to the accident to contact investigating Trooper Matthew Cimelus at the Troop A Barracks in Southbury at 203-267-2200.
