Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ tennis teams concluded their seasons in early June. The girls got all the way to the Class L state tournament’s semifinals before falling to eventual champion New Canaan. The boys’ tourney format is individual-only, and the Nighthawks’ top competitor was No. 1 singles player Cam McCleary, who reached the third round of the Class LL bracket as a No. 16 seed.

The No. 3 Newtown girls blanked No. 29 Fairfield Warde 4-0 and topped No. 6 Staples of Westport 4-2 in a first-round and quarterfinal-round doubleheader day of tennis at Middlebury Racquet Club on May 29. Newtown fell 4-2 to No. 10 New Canaan, at Newtown High School, on May 30.

In the loss to New Canaan, top singles player Caroline Kelly and No. 2 singles player Lauren Beier both won in two sets. Third singles player Lauren Frazzetta went three sets before falling, as did Newtown’s top doubles team of Stephanie Roman and Julia Frattaroli.

In the win over Staples in the quarters, Kelly, Beier, fourth singles player Mia Terracino, and the doubles team of Roman and Frattaroli were all victorious.

Against Warde, all four singles players, Kelly, Beier, Frazzetta, and Terracino all came out on top with two-set triumphs.

The girls had several qualifiers for the State Open, held at Yale in New Haven, June 1-5. The second-seeded doubles tandem of Roman and Frattaroli got all the way to the finals before falling 6-2, 6-4 to top-seeded Kristen Laub and Sara Greene of New Canaan. Frazzetta and Beier reached the Open semifinals. In singles play, Lauren Beier reached the third round, and Kelly advanced to the quarterfinals.

On the boys’ court, McCleary won two rounds before losing a two-setter to No. 2 Reid Risinger of Glastonbury, the eventual runner-up. Tyler Ruefenacht got to the second round.

Newtown’s unseeded doubles team of Keaton McCleary and Nic Klein also won a pair of matches to advance to the third round of the doubles bracket before being knocked out. Also in doubles play, Kunal Marwah and Matt Carino reached the second round.

Marty Margulies, coach of the boys,  announced his retirement at the end of the campaign. Margulies coached the boys for 13 years. Among the highlights of his career was the team’s 2010 conference championship.

“I will really miss the kids —the parents too — but it’s a demanding job, and I felt I was no longer able to invest the time and effort that it requires,” the soon-to-be 73 year old Margulies said.

“I’m grateful to the players for a terrific final season in which we challenged all the way, and to the parents and [Newtown High School Athletic Director] Gregg Simon for their support,” Margulies added.
