The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) will have James Coe painting a landscape in oil, Wednesday, June 12, at 7:30 pm. The demonstration will take place in the lower level of Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street. The public is invited, free of charge.

James Coe is an artist with a passion for birds, nature, and the rural heritage. He studied ornithology at Harvard and earned a master’s in painting from Parsons School of Design. For years Mr Coe painted bird identification plates for field guides. He also wrote and illustrated the Golden Guide Eastern Birds, published in 1994.

Mr Coe shifted gears in 1999 and focused on painting landscapes in plein air. Mr Coe is a Signature Member of the Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society, and the Society of Animal Artists. He is represented by numerous galleries, including three in Connecticut: Cooper & Smith Gallery in Essex, Handwright Gallery in New Canaan, and The Gregory James Gallery in New Milford.

For his upcoming demonstration for SCAN, Mr Coe plans to paint an “inside plein air” landscape in oils, using a photograph as reference.

Reservations are not needed, but additional information is available at scanart.org.

“Summer Morning” is a 12-by-16-inch oil on linen mounted on board by James Coe. An artist with a passion for birds, nature, and rural heritage, Mr Coe will be the guest artist for the next Society of Creative Arts of Newtown program.
