Newtown Continuing Education Camps Announced

Newtown Continuing Education has limited openings available in the following camps and activities in its summer program for students currently in kindergarten to eighth grade. The Young Engineers Workshop — For students exiting fourth to seventh grade, Session I runs from July 8 to July 19, Session II runs from July 22 to August 2, 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, $325, at Reed Intermediate School. The workshop is an engineering concept course for students who enjoy science. Students explore machines, like catapults and trebuchets, and build and test them. And then the workshop will fast forward to more modern inventions, such as rockets and hydraulic machines. Class limited to 12 students.

SMART Camp (Summer Music and Arts) — For students exiting kindergarten to sixth grade, Session I runs from July 8 to July 19, Session II runs from July 22 to August 2, 8:30 am to 1 pm, $349, at Head O’ Meadow Elementary School. Offering creative arts, theater, science, and more with a staff of professional artists and teachers.

Lights, Camera, Action! Video Production For Kids, Part I — For students exiting second grade and up, July 8 to 12, 9 am to noon, $139, at Reed Intermediate School. Basic video skills are taught in this session. Using live and stationary props, students will learn how to get the best shot to capture the magic on video. Editing video and adding audio to video will be taught so that students will have an array of finished videos for the week. Limited to 15 students.

Lights, Camera, Action! Video Production For Kids Part II — For students exiting second grade and up, July 5 to 19, 9 am to noon, $139, at Reed Intermediate School. Students will refine their video-making skills by adding scripts and props to turn their video into a short movie. Different filming techniques such as stop-motion and using a green screen will also be incorporated. By the end of the week students will have learned how to write, film, and edit a video that could be published on YouTube. Lights, Camera, Action! Part I is not a requirement. Limited to 15 students.

Coding For Fun — For students exiting kindergarten to third grade, July 8 to 12, 9 am to noon, $139, Reed Intermediate School. Learning to code is fun. Students will learn to code using interactive games. By learning to code, they are learning the language of computers through games. Learning through trial and error, students will experiment with a variety of interactive programs throughout the week. Minimal reading is necessary to be successful. Limited to 15 Students.

Knit & Chat Summer Camp — For students aged 7 to 12, June 17 to 21, 9 am to noon, $225, at Newtown High School. Give kids and tweens something to do besides video games on rainy days. This is a week-long knitting circle designed to teach the creative art of knitting in a fun “non-frustrating” comprehensive way. No prior knitting experience needed. Learn to cast on, knit, purl and more. Students will create a fashionable item as a main project, and other projects will be completed as time allows. There will be games and other fun crafts as well. All materials and a daily snack/drink provided.
