Pulling a cart of peonies in bloom, Adam Leone was one of many guests perusing gardening plants at the Super Cool Plant Sale on June 1. Hosted by the Newtown Parks and Recreation Department, “unique and unusual” plants, as selected by Fine Gardening magazine editors, filled the lawn along the main entrance to Fairfield Hills.

Stopping to talk with Fine Gardening Editor-in-Chief Steve Aitken was Pat O’Connor, asking about her Peucedanum ostruthium and how it would spread and grow. The plant likes moist soil, he said.

Set on blankets across the lawn were plants for shade, plants for sun, flowering plants, ground covers, and herbs.

Allison Holden also pulled a cart of full of plants that she had selected, and soon, she and her mother, Karyn Holden, stood near a display of additional plants to add to their cart.

Colleen Swanhart and Elizabeth Werlebird had “all cool stuff today” on display from Shakespeare’s Garden. The women also answered questions as shoppers stopped at their table, while other guests looked through the grasses, fruit trees, and flowers.
