An accidental fire that occurred about noon on Saturday, June 9, at the town landfill destroyed this town-owned 2001 Caterpillar excavator, which was being used to move wood debris created by the May 15 storm, town officials said. Town equipment operator Joe Prah was using the machine on a pile of wood debris when he smelled a burning odor. Mr Prah drove the machine off the flammable pile and reported the fire, after which Botsford volunteer firefighters responded to put out the blaze with water and foam. There were no injuries. Fire Marshal Rich Frampton estimated the loss value at $50,000. The town will temporarily rent an excavator for storm debris cleanup work, said Public Works Director Fred Hurley.
