Newtown Assistant Principals To Change Positions

By Eliza Hallabeck

Superintendent of Schools Janet Robinson said this week it took some time to finalize where some of the district’s assistant principals will work for the coming school year, but those placements were made public on Monday, June 11.

Newtown High School Assistant Principal Scott Clayton will be leaving the district at the end of the school year to be principal of a school in Stamford, said Dr Robinson, and Newtown Middle School Assistant Principal Kathy Boettner will replace him.

Sandy Hook School Assistant Principal Anthony Salvatore will replace Ms Boettner at the middle school, and no new assistant principal will be hired for Sandy Hook School, according to Dr Robinson. Instead, a lead teacher will be chosen for Sandy Hook School.

While Dr Robinson said there has been no formal action on the 2012-13 budget by the Board of Education, she felt this decision aligned with a decrease in enrollment at the elementary school. There has been a great deal of success, the superintendent said, with lead teacher positions at each of Newtown’s other three elementary schools, and she said Sandy Hook School Principal Dawn Hochsprung is more than qualified to oversee the change.

“I think that people are very excited to take on a different challenge,” said Dr Robinson.
