Collision At High School

Newtown Police report Keira Kennedy, 17, of Newtown, operating a 2013 Kia Sportage, was exiting Newtown High School at 2:36 pm May 30. She was traveling behind a 2019 Chevrolet Trax operated by Kathie Kyle, 81, of Sandy Hook, who was stopped in traffic. The front of Kennedy’s vehicle made contact with the rear of Kyle’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Forced Car Into Lawn

Newtown Police report Julianna DeGeorge, 26, (hometown not mentioned in the report), was traveling southbound on South Main Street at 3:26 pm May 30. Jose Ramirez, 64, of Danbury, operating a 2006 Honda CR-V, was traveling northbound on South Main Street. DeGeorge’s vehicle struck the driver’s side corner of Ramirez’s vehicle, sending Ramirez into the grass of a residential property.

Both drivers were transported to Danbury Hospital for suspected minor injuries. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

DeGeorge was given a verbal warning for making an improper turn.

Car Vandalized

Newtown Police report that sometime during the overnight hours of May 30 to May 31, an unknown individual slashed a tire and keyed a vehicle parked at the apartments at 9 Covered Bridge Road.

Tractor Trailer Hits Pickup

Newtown Police report Giovanni Ortiz, 20, of Hamden, operating a 2012 Mack 600 tractor trailer, was turning left from Commerce Road onto Church Hill Road at 6:54 am May 31. Emil Roland, 49, of Newtown, operating a 2002 Ford F350, was traveling northbound on Commerce Road and had stopped to give space to the tractor trailer. The left rear tire of the trailer struck the front left of Roland’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Roland’s vehicle was towed.

Ortiz was given a verbal warning for making an improper turn.

Struck Deer On South Main

Newtown Police report Emily DeMarco, 33, of Newtown, operating a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was traveling northbound on South Main Street at 3:07 pm May 31. A deer ran into the roadway from the east side of the road and DeMarco’s vehicle struck it.

Demarco was uninjured. The vehicle was not towed.

No enforcement action was taken.

Parking Lot Fender Bender

Newtown Police report Katherine Bottone, 16, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2012 Honda CR-V, was attempting to park in a parking spot in the lot of 228 South Main Street at 4:03 pm June 1. Elaine Russell, 61, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2018 Nissan Sentra, was parked in an adjacent spot. The front right part of Bottone’s front bumper hit the left rear quarter panel of Russell’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Ran Red Light

Newtown Police report Addison Della, 16, of Newtown, operating a 2012 Toyota Rav4, was traveling southbound on Main Street at 5:28 pm June 1. Stacey Lokey, 54, of Newtown, operating a 2024 Mercedes-Benz, was traveling northbound on South Main Street in the left turn only lane and stopped for a red light at the Sugar Street intersection. Della stopped in the right turn only lane at the same intersection and after stopping at the red light, made a turn onto Sugar Street and struck Lokey’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Della was verbally warning for failure to obey a traffic control signal. She received an infraction for violation of passenger restrictions for 16 and 17 year old drivers.

Struck Tree

Newtown Police report Calisto Yepez, 61, of Danbury, operating a 2017 Subaru WRX, was traveling southbound on Hattertown Road at 7:23 pm June 1. Yepez’s vehicle traveled off the roadway and struck a tree.

Yepez was transported to Danbury Hospital for a suspected minor injury. The vehicle was towed.

Yepez was issued an infraction for failure to maintain a lane.

Excessive Speed

Newtown Police report Christopher Portolese, 32, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2015 Subaru Crosstrek, was traveling eastbound on Church Hill Road at 8:31 pm June 2. A witness told police they saw Portolese’s vehicle pass by Gino’s, 102 Church Hill Road, “in excess of 65 miles per hour.” The vehicle continued onto Riverside Road at an excessive speed, and Portolese lost control of the vehicle due to a dip in the pavement and the slope of the road. The vehicle struck the stone curbing on the right side of the road with the right front tire and traveled approximately 100 feet along the curbing before crossing over the center line, down an embankment, and coming to a rest against a large bush and fence in the front yard of a property on Riverside Road.

Portolese was transported to Danbury Hospital for a suspected minor injury. A passenger declined medical assistance. The vehicle was towed.

Enforcement is pending.

Hit Stone Wall And Pole

Newtown Police report Savannah Davidow, 24, of Newtown, operating a 2012 Subaru Forester, was traveling westbound on Nunnawauk Road at 12:46 am June 4. Davidow’s vehicle left the roadway and collided with a stone wall and utility pole.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.

This incident was in addition to charges filed against Davidow in the June 7 Police Reports.

Tiguan Hits Tiguan

Newtown Police report Gjin Abazi, 19, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan, was traveling on Washington Avenue at 2:10 pm June 4. He was traveling behind a 2024 Volkwagen Tiguan operated by Richard Oppel, 45, of Sandy Hook. Oppel stopped for traffic and Abazi rear-ended his vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Abazi was issued a verbal warning for following too close.

Hit Deer On Berkshire Road

Newtown Police report Joyce Patria, 55, of Ansonia, operating a 2010 Honda Accord, was traveling eastbound on Berkshire Road at 8:57 pm June 5. A deer ran in front of Patria’s vehicle and was struck.

Patria was not injured. The vehicle was not towed.

No enforcement action was taken.

Passing On Right

Newtown Police report Kevin Barrett, 62, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2013 Toyota Tacoma, was traveling westbound on Mile Hill Road at 4:21 pm June 6. Caswell Simpson, 63, of Bethel, operating a 2001 Honda Civic, was traveling eastbound and attempting to turn left into a driveway. Barrett’s vehicle struck Simpson’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Barrett was issued a verbal warning for passing on the right.

Unreasonable Distance

Newtown Police report Antonio Rodriguez, 22, of New Milford, operating a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe, was traveling southbound on Hawleyville Road at 5:31 pm June 6. He was traveling behind a 2020 Nissan Altima operated by Heather Ahrstrom, 47, of Danbury. Ahrstrom came to a stop in the southbound lane, waiting to make a left turn onto the Interstate 84 exit 9 on ramp. Rodriguez was unable to stop in time and rear-ended Ahrstrom’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Rodriguez was issued an infraction for traveling an unreasonable distance apart.

Toppled Bench

Newtown Police report that at 6:14 pm June 6, officers responded to the report of a stone bench that was toppled over at Ram’s Pasture.
