Wilmer J. Mathuren, 93, of Newtown and previously of Dingmans Ferry, Penn., died June 16, at Danbury Hospital. He was born September 20, 1919, in Acushnet, Mass., son of Margaret (Blackburn) Mathuren and Samuel Joseph Mathuren, and was the husband of Anne (Teslicka) (Zayatz) Mathuren.

Mr Mathuren was a US Army veteran, having served during World War II and attaining the rank of sergeant. He received the American Service Metal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.

He was a machinist in the paper industry, and worked at Century Envelope Company for many years. While in Pennsylvania, Mr Mathuren was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion, and served as an usher at St Vincent’s Catholic Church.

Besides his wife, he leaves four daughters, Lucille Muscarella of Old Lyme, Linda Koller of Southbury, Joyce Stapleton of Freehold, N.J., and Veronica Zayatz of Charlotte, N.C. He also leaves six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. His parents; his first wife, Germaine (Gobeil) Mathuren; a son, Richard; and two sisters, Alice and Blanche, predeceased Mr Mathuren.

A Funeral Mass will take place Thursday, June 20, at 10 am, at St Thomas the Apostle Church, Oxford. Calling hours are Wednesday, June 19, from 4 to 8 pm, at the Southbury Funeral Home of Munson-Lovetere, 235 Main Street North, Southbury. Burial with military honors will be in Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, N.Y.
