BETHEL – Kyle Kromberg went 3-for-3 with two RBI and Keith McGrath knocked in three more runs to lead the Newtown 10-year-old All Stars to a 9-4 win over New Milford in the opening round of the Bethel Tournament.

Newtown went on to defeat Southbury (11-0) and Bethel (3-1), but lost a heart-breaker to New Fairfield (3-2) and will now have to win three games in a row (beginning on Wednesday night) to capture the tournament title.

In the win over New Milford, Newtown took a commanding lead by scoring all nine runs in the second and third innings.

Ryan Cahalane (two walks), McGrath, (double), Kromberg (double), Kyle O’Connor (RBI single), and Michael Coates (RBI single) lead the early charge in the second inning. In the third, Ralph Sergiovanni (single), George Zaruba (walk), Cahalane (sacrifice), McGrath (two-run single), Kromberg (RBI single) and Jeff Spencer (RBI single) sparked the offense.

In the win over Southbury (which was busted open with an eight-run second inning explosion), Tyler Edwards drove in a pair of runs, Zaruba was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs, and Kromberg knocked in a couple of runs.

Spencer tripled and Cahalane, Edwards and Joe Fedak doubled to spark the second-inning explosion. Robbie Blanc, Coates, Zaruba and Jeff DiNicola also had fun in that inning, scoring runs to eventually force the mercy rule.

Zaruba, Cahalane and DiNicola combined on the two hitter.

In the win over Bethel, Sergiovanni rapped an RBI double to put Newtown on the board in the first inning and O’Conner doubled home Kromberg in the second inning to put Newtown on top, 2-1. Blanc drove O’Connor home with an RBI single, giving Newtown an insurance run.

Fedak, Zaruba and Spencer combined to hold Bethel to just one hit in four innings. Sergiovanni closed out the game, facing just seven batters in two innings of work to earn the save.

In the loss to New Fairfield, it was a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth which saddled Newtown with its only loss of the tournament.

Newtown took a 1-0 lead in the first when McGrath singled home Fedak. After New Fairfield tied the score in the top of the second, Newtown went back on top when Edwards’ sacrifice fly plated Jeff Spencer with the second run.

That lead held up until the sixth.

Coates, Blanc, DiNicola and Sergiovanni led a strong pitching effort, allowing just two hits and four walks between them.
