Town officials learned this week that F. Francis D’Addario filed an application with the state Department of Environmental Protection June 17 to expand his Button Shop Road bulky waste disposal site another 16 acres. The additional 16-acre site under review is adjacent to the original area and would involve filling some ponds.

Sarah and Michael Gallo aren’t old enough to have their driver’s licenses, but that hasn’t prevented them from racing two of the hottest cars around. Last Sunday at the Greater Danbury Soap Box Derby, Sarah, 14, and Michael, 12, swept through their respective fields to become champions of the Senior and Junior Divisions.

The Kiwanis Club of Newtown will sell beer at the Newtown Summer Festival’s block party on Sunday, August 4, from 1 pm to dusk, at the Newtown Shopping Center. Club Secretary Steve Gold and members Phil Owens and Dennis Catino are currently planning for the event.

 

July 1, 1960

The Fifth Annual Firemen’s Carnival operated by and for the Newtown Combined Fire Companies, will take place at the Italian Community Center on Route 34 in Sandy Hook, from Monday, July 4, through Saturday, July 9. This is the first time that the five volunteer fire companies have held their carnival in this location. An outstanding feature will be the Miss Newtown Beauty Contest. The very special event of the carnival is always the firemen’s parade, Wednesday evening, July 6. There will be over 30 visiting fire companies.

Members and friends of Congregation Adath Israel attended in large number the dedication ceremonies held on Sunday afternoon at the synagogue in Huntingtown district. It was an impressive occasion, marking completion of the renovation of the structure and rededication to its continued use as a house of worship.

The sales campaign, “Shop And Win In Newtown” conducted under the direction of the merchants’ committee of the Newtown Chamber of Commerce will open on July 4 and continue through September 3. The campaign will be carried out through the use of a “Shop And Win” coupon. Coupons may be left only with stores which are members of the Chamber. A drawing will be held each week to receive a certificate good for $10 worth of merchandise.

Wednesday evening is Newtown’s teenagers’ opportunity to bring their own dance parties to the high school, 8:30 to 10 pm. The former cafeteria is available along with all types of dance records and a record player. It is just a free recreation session for those who wish to keep in touch until the Teen Canteen opens again in the fall.

June 28, 1935

Nine children, out of 52, were found to be in perfect physical condition, as a result of the bi-annual summer round-up conducted here in Newtown last week. The most frequent defect among theses children of pre-school age was of a dental nature, showing the need of a dental clinic in our schools. If a dental clinic or anything else will aid to detect slight defects of health which are easily corrected while children are young, by all means let’s set about getting it.

At the town meeting held on Friday evening at the Edmond Town hall it was voted to authorize the selectmen to borrow $2,500 from the Newtown Savings Bank to be used for the purpose of caring for the town poor. Arthur T. Nettleton was chairman of the meeting.

Wide interest is being shown in the Colonial Costume Ball which will be given next Wednesday evening, July 3, in the Edmond gymnasium, under the auspices of the Chamber of Commerce. This event promises to be one of the most enjoyable in our local Connecticut Tercentenary Celebration and tickets at 50 cents per person are in large demand.

Fire broke out in a barn on the farm of Charles Anthes near Shady Rest on Tuesday morning. The local fire company was called but were unable to render much assistance, as the barn was a mass of flames upon their arrival. The firemen did excellent work, however, in saving the house which caught fire several times.

 

July 1, 1910

A popular Palestine young lady distinguished herself, one day recently, by killing two skunks. When skunk No 3 loomed up on the horizon, she took to her heels and made a mile in three minutes and eight seconds. This is the exact truth. For particulars, apply in Palestine.

The general interest taken in the Newtown High School was evinced afresh in the great audience which filled the Town hall to the doors, Friday evening. Shortly after 8 pm, the procession, composed of the principal and assistant teachers, and the members of the High School committee members of the school board marched into the hall, led by Earle Curtiss Peck, bearing the High school banner. The decorative arrangement of the hall and stage was exceedingly tasteful. Over the stage was the class motto, “Victory crowns the Faithful.”

August Rosenfens, who cares for Mrs P. Callahan’s garden in Sandy Hook, has a fine one this year, and it is very early. They have been picking peas from it for two weeks and have also had all other early vegetables for the table. Mr Rosenfens is justly proud of it.

The patriotic people of Sandy Hook have arranged for the usual exhibition of fire works on the night of July 4 on Lake Niantic near the postoffice. The fire works will be set off about dark, and the public are generally invited. It is always a pleasant, informal sort of gathering and the townspeople are indebted to the wide awake folks in the Hook for this fine display.
