Greene To Be Mainstage Performer At Litchfield Jazz Festival

GOSHEN - Litchfield Jazz Festival (LJF) will welcome to its Mainstage the renowned Newtown-based saxophonist Jimmy Greene.DownBeat Magazine called him a "Rising Star" three years later.nominated for a Grammy Award last year for his album Beautiful Life, honoring his daughter Ana Marquez-Greene, one of the children killed on 12/14.60 Minutes and the Today Show, and is currently assistant professor of music and coordinator of jazz studies at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury.litchfieldjazzfest.com or call 860-361-6285.

A 2015 Grammy nominee, Mr Greene will appear as special guest and mentor for another Connecticut native, drummer Richie Barshay. They are part of a program the festival has called "Generations of Jazz," marking the 20th anniversary of Litchfield Jazz Camp by pairing young jazz professionals who are products of the Camp with mentors who have had an impact on their musical journeys.

Mr Greene is one of the most respected saxophonists of his generation. Even before his graduation from Hartt School of Music in 1997, he was named first runner-up in The 1996 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition.

Mr Greene served on the first Litchfield Jazz Camp faculty in 1997. This year's will be his ninth appearance at LJF.

He will appear with Richie Barshay and bassist Jorge Roeder at Saturday, August 6, at 1:45 pm.

The 21st anniversary Litchfield Jazz Festival will be presented August 6-7 at Goshen Fairgrounds, 116 Old Middle Street. It offers performances as well as art, food, and clinics.

Additional performers currently scheduled for Saturday include Andrew Hadro with Tony Malaby, Albert Rivera with Paul Bollenback ("Back At It"), Nicole Zuraitis with Dave Stryker, and Daryl Johns with Orrin Evans ("Saluting Errol Garner's Concert by the Sea").

Sunday's scheduled performers include Friends of the Festival, led by Donald Harrison, offering "Scat & Scramble Brunch"; Avery Sharpe and Matt Wilson, Emmet Cohen with Jimmy Heath, Litchfield Jazz Orchestra performing "Earth Wind & Wonder," and The Curtis Brothers with Donald Harrison.

Percussionist Richie Barshay, who was recruited for The Herbie Hancock Quartet while still a student at New England Conservatory-was called "a player to watch" by JazzTimes. He will be joining Jimmy Greene for a mainstage performance at Litchfield Jazz Festival on August 6.
