Police report that at 10:44 am on June 24, they were dispatched to a residence on Underhill Road for a health and welfare check regarding multiple children who were allegedly left alone in that home.

After investigating, police said they arrested a woman who lives there, charging her with three counts of risk of injury to a child, which is a Class C felony, in connection with alleged child neglect.

Based on the residential conditions that police encountered, they sought assistance in the case from the town’s Building Department, Health Department, and Fire Marshal’s Office, as well as the Newtown Health & Wellness Center, plus the state Department of Children and Families (DCF). The three children are now under the care of DCF.

An inspection of the premises resulted in the house being condemned by the Building Department due to unsanitary conditions. Correcting the problems would allow people to again live at that rental property.

The woman arrested by police was arraigned on June 25 in Connecticut Superior Court in Danbury. She did not plead to the three charges. The woman, who is represented by a public defender, is free on $1,000 bail for a July 23 court appearance. The case is expected to be transferred to the Judicial Branch’s Family Criminal Court division for adjudication, police said.
