The ‘Oy Vey’ Times Of Aging Parents Program July 10

SOUTHBURY — A panel of community members and professionals will offer a free program on Tuesday, July 10, at 7 pm, at the Jewish Federation, 444 Main Street North, to explore issues such as end of life, finances, trusting children and power of attorney, all with humor, compassion, and practical advice.

“Talking about the birds and the bees is a piece of cake for many families compared to discussing money or mortality,” explained Debby Horowitz, Brownstein Jewish Family Service director. “What a difference even two parents in the same household can have in their attitudes, and even siblings who love and support each other through lots of ‘oy vey’ times with aging parents can feel tensions that sometimes seem insurmountable.”

Jane Mahler of Waterbury, who lost both of her parents less than six months apart, will share her personal experience throughout the last 18 months. She will also explain other issues children of elderly or deceased parents, or any other person designated by the family, will need to understand and navigate.

Lorraine Luger, LCSW, regional supervisor at Connecticut Community Care, Inc, will discuss family issues, including tensions and conflicts that arise between siblings, a surviving spouse, and children.

Julia M. Brown, a certified elder law attorney, will discuss legal issues related to aging, including conservatorship, power of attorney, living wills, and property transfers. And Dr Joe Horowitz, who is looking forward to his 90th birthday, has agreed to share his experience with planning and organizing his own paperwork.

This program is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Call Debby Horowitz at 203-267-3177, extension 310.
