DUI Charge

Police report that early on the morning of July 6 they spotted motorist John J. Straniti, 30, of 1 Partridge Lane driving a vehicle on Castle Hill Road without its headlamps on.

Police said they stopped Straniti and investigated, giving him field sobriety tests which he failed.

Police charged Straniti with driving under the influence, possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and failure to operate a motor vehicle with headlamps on.

After processing, police released Straniti for a July 24 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Bicycle Found

Police report that town workers found a bicycle in Dickinson Park on June 17. The blue Giant brand mountain bike is the Boulder model. A bicycle helmet also was found. The owner of the bike may claim it at the police station. For information, contact Youth Officer Dana Schubert at 426-5841 or 270-4239.

Forgery Warrant

Police said they charged Matthew Mitaly, 30, of Easton on a warrant at Danbury Superior Court July 6, lodging charges of second-degree forgery and fourth-degree larceny. The charges stem from a police investigation into Mitaly’s alleged forgery and cashing of a check for $852 at a Newtown bank last September, police said.

Police said a judge arraigned Mitaly on the charges July 6.

 

Two Warrants

Police said that on his release from Cheshire Correctional Institution in Cheshire on July 6, they served two arrest warrants against Arthur Cordio, 30, of Watertown. One warrant charges Cordio with operating a motor vehicle while under suspension and evading responsibility. The other warrant charges him with failure to appear in court and operating a motor vehicle while under suspension.

After posting a bond, police released Cordio for a July 17 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Public Indecency

Police report that at about 7 pm July 6, Michael Seri, 43, of 197 Huntingtown Road came to the police station after learning that police had a warrant for his arrest stemming from a March 13 incident at Booth Library at 25 Main Street.

Police said they charged Seri with public indecency, risk of injury to a minor, and breach of peace in the case.

After the alleged incident occurred, police reported that a male, described as approximately 40 years old, had exposed himself to a young female inside the library. Police provided no other details on the incident.

Police released Seri on a promise to appear July 21 in Danbury Superior Court.

Party Incident

Police said that at about 12:04 am July 7, several uninvited persons arrived at a party which was being held at a residence on Arlyn Ridge Road.

The persons were told to leave the premises, but an argument ensued and one of the uninvited persons struck the victim of the incident in the face, police said. The incident constitutes a case of third-degree assault and breach of peace.

Police ask anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

Sandy Hook Crash

Police report a two-vehicle accident on Route 34 near Pole Bridge Road about 3 pm July 6.

Police said eastbound motorist Jeffrey A. Peters, 17, of 9 Arrowhead Lane, Sandy Hook, who was driving a 1988 Plymouth Reliant, stopped in the eastbound lane and was waiting to make a left turn in the Thomas’s Deli parking lot when he was struck from behind by eastbound motorist Richard S. O’Brien, 18, of Derby, who was driving a 1994 Ford Econoline van. After the impact, the van went off the eastbound road shoulder and struck a stone wall, police said. There were no injuries.

Police issued O’Brien an infraction ticket for traveling an unsafe distance apart.

Garner Incident

State police report they are investigating an incident in which an inmate at the high-security Garner Correctional Institution on Nunnawauk Road allegedly kicked a correction officer, causing a minor leg injury, on July 5. State police provided no other details on the matter. The case is under investigation.

Exit 11 Accident

State police report a two-vehicle accident at the end of the Exit 11 off-ramp of Interstate 84 about 6 pm, July 8.

State police said motorist Miranda S. Pacchiana, 32, of 21 Gelding Hill Road, Sandy Hook, who was driving a 1995 Volvo 850 station wagon, stopped at the end of the ramp and was struck from behind by motorist Sergio Souza, 41, of Arlington, Virginia, who was driving a 1991 Ford Explorer. Ms Pacchiana reported shoulder pain and said she was 21 weeks pregnant, state police said. The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps went to the scene, but Ms Pacchiana refused ambulance transport, saying she would go the Danbury Hospital on her own, state police said.

State police issued Souza a written warning for following too closely.

Exit 10 Crash

Motorist Rohan Duckworth, 26, of Danbury was driving a 1997 Infiniti J-30 on westbound Interstate 84 and approaching Exit 10 at about 5 pm July 7, when the Infiniti went out of control and struck a concrete barrier rail along the right road shoulder, state police said.

Duckworth was not injured. State police said Duckworth failed to drive in the established lane.

Loveland Drive

Police said that at about 11 pm July 8 someone damaged a mailbox at a Loveland Drive home. A witness reported to police that he saw several white males with baseball bats leaving the area at the time in a silver-colored sport-utility vehicle. Loveland Drive is a dead end street off Great Quarter Road in Sandy Hook. Police ask anyone with information about the incident to contact them.

CD Theft

Someone sometime between 3 pm July 7 and 3 pm July 8 stole approximately 120 compact discs from the front seat of a vehicle parked in front of a home on Brookwood Drive, police said. Brookwood Drive is in Dodgingtown, near the Bethel town line. The CDs consisted of rock and jazz titles. Police ask anyone with information about the theft to contact them.

 

Bicycles Found

Police report that two abandoned bicycles were found in the Maltbie Road/Castle Meadow Road area July 12. One is a Redline BMX-style bicycle and the other is a “We the People” BMX-style bicycle. The bikes are being kept at the police station. The owners may contact police at 426-5841.
