Selected areas of Lake Zoar will be chemically treated with herbicide and algaecide in seeking to control the two aquatic nuisance plants known as Eurasian water milfoil and curly leaf pondweed, according to a statement from the town.

The water treatment is scheduled for Wednesday, July 13. If the treatment does not occur that day due to inclement weather, the rain date for the work is Wednesday, July 20.

Before treatment occurs, the lake shoreline in the treatment areas and at public access sites will be posted with signs about the chemical treatment.

Maps depicting the treatment areas will be posted at the state boat ramp in Southbury and at other public access sites to the lake before the treatment occurs.

The shorelines of the treated areas will be posted with signs that list the following temporary water use restrictions in those areas: no swimming in treated areas on the day of treatment; no use of treated lake water for drinking purposes for three days; no use of treated lake water for livestock or domestic animal consumption for one day; no use of treated lake water for irrigating turf or ornamental plants for three days; and no use of treated lake water for irrigating food crops or production ornamental plants for five days.

The temporary water use restrictions apply only to the areas treated.

Copper sulfate, which is an algaecide, and  diquat, which is an herbicide, will be applied in the project.
