Motorcycle vs Deer

Police report that at about 5:39 am on July 16, motorcyclist Joseph Genest, 42, of Naugatuck, was riding a 2009 Yamaha XVS-1300-CT westward on Wasserman Way, near its intersection with Trades Lane, when a deer entered the roadway, after which the motorcycle and the deer collided.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Genest to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries.

DUI Incident

Police said they received a call about 8:09 pm on July 16, informing them that a one-vehicle accident had occurred near 42 Taunton Lake Drive, so they responded to investigate.

Police later found the vehicle in question on Mt Pleasant Road, and after investigating, charged motorist Jack Phelps, 19, with DUI by a person under age 21, evading responsibility, failure to drive in the proper lane, illegal possession of alcohol by a minor, and possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana.

After processing, police released Phelps on $250 bail for an August 2 court appearance.

Evading

Police report that at about 12:27 am on July 15, motorist Joshua Zybort, 37, of Oxford, who was driving a vehicle near the intersection of Orchard Hill Road and Platts Hill Road, drove off the roadway in an accident, after which he left the scene of the accident on foot.

About 3 am, police found Zybort walking northward on South Main Street, after which they investigated and charged him with evading responsibility and with failure to obey a stop sign. After processing, police released Zybort on $100 bail for a July 31 court appearance.

Pedestrian Struck

Police report that at about 9:10 am on July 15, a 57-year-old woman was walking northward on Swamp Road alongside the northbound travel lane when an exterior rear-view mirror on a vehicle traveling northward struck the woman's left elbow.

The motorist did not stop, but continued traveling on Swamp and then turned right onto Botsford Hill Road. The woman received a minor injury in the incident.

Police ask anyone who knows the identity of the driver who struck the woman to contact them at 203-426-5841.

Off The Road

Motorist Trevor Tyrrell, 16, of Sandy Hook, was driving a 2004 Saturn Vue SUV westward on Pond Brook Road about 3:50 pm on July 15 when he crested a hill and then lost control of the auto, striking and shattering a utility pole, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Tyrrell an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.

Truck Hits Sign

At about 1:06 am on July 13, Abdifatah Ismail, 31, no address given, was driving a 2010 International truck westward on Interstate 84, about 100 yards west of the Church Hill Road overpass, when the truck veered to the right near Exit 10 and struck a traffic sign, state police said. There were no injuries. State police verbally warned Ismail for failure to maintain the proper lane.

Forced Entry

Police report that sometime between 3 pm on Friday, July 13, and 8 am on Saturday, July 14, someone broke the driver's window of a vehicle parked in a driveway at a home on Old Purdy Station Road to gain entry to the vehicle, but apparently stole nothing from within.

Police are investigating and ask anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact them at 203-426-5841.

Jeep vs Mercedes

State police report that at about 5:09 pm on July 13 on eastbound Interstate 84, east of Exit 9, amid heavy traffic conditions, motorist Susan Jungkvist, 68, of Woodbury, who was driving a 2015 Jeep Compass SUV, struck the rear end of a 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE auto driven by Brian Lee, 46, of Matawan, N.J.

There were no injuries. Jungkvist received a infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Main Street Collision

Police report that motorist Jennifer Cramer 48, of Newtown, who was driving a 2006 Honda Pilot SUV northward on Main Street, stopped in preparing to make a left turn to enter a parking area at the Edmond Town Hall grounds at about 4:30 pm on July 12, after which the Honda was struck from behind by a northbound 2008 Toyota RAV-4 SUV driven by Tyler Rising, 18, of Sandy Hook.

Ambulance staffers evaluated Rising at the scene, but made no transport. Rising was verbally warned for following too closely, according to police.

Asleep At Wheel

Motorist James Muriceak, 51, of Camp Hill, Penn., who was driving a 2003 Lexus ES sedan eastward on Interstate 84, near the Exit 10 off-ramp, about 1:25 pm on July 11, fell asleep at the wheel and then struck the guardrails on the median, state police said. Muriceak was not injured.

State police verbally warned Muriceak for failure to drive in the proper lane.

Old Case

On the afternoon of July 11, after learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Ralston Boyd, 65, of Waterbury, went to the police station, where police arrested him on a charge of second-degree failure to appear in court.

Police said that Boyd had failed to appear in Connecticut Superior Court on May 19, 2008, in connection with a charge that was lodged against him at a December 5, 2007, motor vehicle stop. After arrest processing on July 11, police held Boyd on $1,000 bail for a July 12 court appearance.

Intersection Crash

At about 11:01 am on July 10, motorist Shanna Adam, 16, of Newtown, who was driving a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox SUV northward on Huntingtown Road, came to a stop at a stop sign on that street at its intersection with South Main Street, police said.

At that time, motorist Rilind Abazi, 20, of Newtown, was driving a 2009 Ford Focus southward on South Main Street. The Chevrolet then attempted to make a left turn to head northward on South Main Street, but the two vehicles collided.

There were no injuries. Police issued Adam an infraction for failure to grant the right of way.

Hattertown Road

Police report a vehicular accident on Hattertown Road, near its intersection with Castle Meadow Road, about 7:51 am on July 9.

Motorist Brett Deshay, 39, of Newtown, was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Traverse SUV southward on Hattertown Road, as motorist Jenessa Mason, 20, of Bridgeport, was driving a 2006 Toyota Corolla sedan northward there. The Toyota then attempted to pass a northbound non-contact vehicle, but struck the Chevrolet.

Ambulance staffers checked Mason at the scene, police said. Mason received an infraction for passing in a no-passing zone and for disregarding traffic signs.

Overlook Drive

At about 3:44 pm on July 9, motorist Ricard McCullich 39, of Newtown, was backing a 2004 Ford F-350 truck out of a driveway on Overlook Drive when the Ford struck an illegally parked 2000 Mercedes-Benz E-320 sedan, police said. There were no injuries.

Police verbally warned McCullich for unsafe backing, and they verbally warned the Mercedes' owner, George Wilson, of Newtown, for illegal parking and for driving an unregistered vehicle.

SUV vs Hatchback

Police report a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Church Hill Road and Commerce Road about 6:10 pm on July 9.

A 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV driven by Holly Troccolla, 54, of Sandy Hook, collided with a 2015 Lexus CT-200-H hatchback driven by Christer Nydell, 53, of Newtown. Both drivers told police that they had the green light at the traffic signal before they entered the intersection from different directions and collided, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Troccolla an infraction for driving without a license.

Intersection Collision

About 6:14 pm on July 9, motorist Laura Mossey, 45, of Orange, who was driving a 2007 Acura TL sedan on Hanover Road, drove past a stop sign and struck a 2015 Mercedes-Benz S-550 sedan driven by Richard Vanwaalwijk, 60, of Newtown, which was traveling northward on The Boulevard.

After the impact, the Acura spun about and caught on fire. Mossey was not injured.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Vanwaalwijk to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries.

Police report Mossey was issued an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign.

Sandy Hook Accident

About 4:39 pm on June 25, motorist Bruce Kramer, 69, of New Fairfield, was driving a 2004 Honda CR-V SUV westward on Berkshire Road behind westbound motorist Enzo Merlonghi, 17, of Monroe, who was driving a 2008 Subaru Impreza.

The Subaru then attempted to make a right turn onto Great Quarter Road, after which the Honda struck the rear end of the Subaru. A passenger in the Subaru declined medical attention, according to police.

Police issued Kramer a misdemeanor summons for following too closely and for driving with a suspended license.

Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue firefighters Scott Allen, left, and Archie Paloian were among that company's members to respond shortly after 8 am July 18 to Wasserman Way in front of the Exit 11 commuter lot. Police report that motorist Benjamin Shaw, 46, of Danbury was driving a 2012 Volkswagen Passat sedan eastward on Wasserman Way, when he lost control of the auto, drove off the right road shoulder and struck a utility pole near the commuter parking lot Wednesday morning. Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps also responded to the crash. Shaw was not transported to the hospital, police said. Police issued Shaw a written warning for making a restricted turn. Eversource went to the scene to check on the pole, which was damaged near its base due to the impact.
