DUI Arrest

Police report that at about 3:14 am on July 19, they spotted a Honda CR-V SUV  traveling eastward on Church Hill Road, near Commerce Road, and crossing the road's center lines several times, so they stopped the vehicle to investigate.

After investigating, police said they charged motorist Andrew Gordon, 24, of Sandy Hook, with driving under the influence and with failure to drive to the right.

Following processing, police released Gordon on $100 bail for an August 3 arraignment on the charges in state Superior Court in Danbury.

Intersection Accident

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Berkshire Road, Grays Plain Road, and Bennetts Bridge Road about 6:34 pm on July 18.

The collision involved motorist Regina Creaney, 23, of Danbury, who was driving a 2015 Jeep Patriot SUV, and motorist Eric Tucker, 23, of Monroe, who was driving a 2010 Infiniti M-35 sedan, police report.

There were no injuries.

Police said they verbally warned Creaney for failure to obey a stop sign.

Five Charges

Police report they stopped motorist Brendan Brooks, 27, of Newtown, near the intersection of Main Street and Martin Street for a motor vehicle violation at about 2 am on July 18.

After investigating, they charged Brooks with traveling too fast for conditions, violation of a protective order, interfering with police, disobeying a police signal to stop, and driving under suspension.

Police report they held Brooks on $10,000 bail for an arraignment on the charges later that day in state Superior Court in Danbury. At his arraignment, Brooks pleaded not guilty to all charges. He was released on a written promise to appear in court on September 7.

Auto Theft

Police report that sometime overnight on July 16-17, someone entered an unlocked 2005 Jeep SUV, which was parked in a residential driveway on Sky Top Drive. The intruder found the car's keys within the vehicle and then stole the auto, according to police.

Also, during the same period, an unknown person illegally entered an unspecified vehicle parked at a property on nearby Crown View Drive.

Police are investigating and ask anyone with information about the incidents to contact them at the police station at 203-426-5841.

Police urge that residents lock their vehicles when they are left unattended and not leave the automotive keys inside the vehicles.

Hattertown Road Crash

At about 3:15 am on July 16, motorist Luis Saquicela-Lalvay, 41, of Bethel, was driving a 2007 Ford F-150 pickup truck northward on Hattertown Road, near the Monroe town line, when the truck drove off the road's right shoulder and struck some guardcabling, after which it entered a ditch and then struck a large rock.

Saquicela-Lalvay was transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries, police said. The accident is under investigation.

I-84 DUI

State police report they received several 911 calls informing them that there was an erratic driver traveling on eastbound Interstate 84 in a white Jeep Cherokee SUV with Vermont marker plates at about 9:30 pm on July 15, so they went to the area to investigate.

They stopped motorist Jonathan Strong, 28, of Hartford driving the auto in question and violating motor vehicle laws, just east of Exit 11. After investigating, state police charged Strong with driving under the influence, misuse of marker plates, failure to have automotive insurance, and failure to drive in the proper lane.

Following arrest processing, state police released Strong on $1,000 nonsurety bail for a July 27 court appearance.

Highway Crash

An accident involving three vehicles occurred on eastbound Interstate 84, about one mile west of Exit 10, about 2:54 pm on July 14.

Traffic traveling on the highway slowed suddenly, after which motorist Hersh Moskowitz, 21, of Monroe, N.Y., who was diving a 2016 Toyota Camry, slowed. Motorist Anthony Martelli, 22, of Oakville, who was driving a 2005 Subaru Impreza, then struck the rear end of the Toyota, state police said. Motorist Eric Williams, Jr, 36, of New Milford, who was driving a 2011 BMW 535-XI, then struck the rear end of the Subaru.

Williams reported pain, but refused medical attention at the scene. Martelli received a misdemeanor summons on charges of failure to have automotive insurance and failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, according to state police. Williams received an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Highway Accident

At about 7:15 pm on July 14, motorist Megan Lohutko, 23, of Westbrook, who was driving a 2013 Dodge Dart auto eastward on Interstate 84, stopped for some stopped traffic, and was then struck from behind by motorist Michael Thomas, 19, of Brooklyn, N.Y., who was driving a 2007 Hyundai Azera sedan, state police said.

There were no injuries.

State police said they issued Thomas an infraction for following too closely.

Arrest Warrant

Police said that on July 14, they traveled to Shelton, where they found Michael Coscia, 20, of Shelton, at his home and then transported him to the Newtown police station, where they arrested Coscia on a warrant, charging him with driving under the influence by a minor with an elevated blood alcohol content, failure to drive to the right, and failure to wear a seat belt.

The charges stem from an accident that occurred late on the night of April 15, in which Coscia was driving a Honda CR-V SUV westward on Butterfield Road, about 1,000 feet east of its intersection with Autumn Ridge Road, when while taking a curve in the road, the Honda entered the opposite lane and drove off the left side of the street. The Honda then traveled down an embankment and struck a tree, coming to rest about 100 feet off the roadway. Coscia was then transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries.

On July 15, police processed the charges, after which they released Coscia on $500 bail for a July 27 court appearance.

Three Vehicles

At about 12:24 pm on July 13, motorist Benjamin Nowacki, 16, of Sandy Hook, was driving a 2017 Honda Civic eastward on Berkshire Road, as trucker Anthony Galko, 61, of Northford was driving a 2000 Kenworth T-800 truck westward there, police report.

The Honda then attempted to make a left turn, but in doing so, it entered the path of the Kenworth, resulting in a collision. The Honda was pushed by that impact and the Honda then struck a 2005 Toyota Camry sedan, which was waiting on Pole Bridge Road. The Toyota was driven by Gordon Dunn, 55, of Sandy Hook, according to police.

There were no injuries. Police are investigating the incident and said they are seeking the driver of a gold-colored or brown station wagon, which was in the area at the time of the accident.

Anyone with information on the driver of that vehicle is asked to contact police at 203-426-5841.

DUI Arrest

Police report that at about 10 pm on July 13, they received a report about an erratically driven vehicle traveling near the intersection of Glen Road and Pine Street, so they went there to investigate.

Police said they found a vehicle fitting the description received parked in a parking lot at 104 Glen Road. Police found motorist Sarah Bell, 58, of Southbury in the driver's seat. After investigating, police charged Bell with diving under the influence.

Police report they held Bell on $500 bail for a July 14 arraignment in state Superior Court in Danbury. In court, Bell pleaded not guilty. Bell was released without bail for an August 4 court appearance.

Chevy Off Road

Motorist Daniel Godejohn, 57, of Sandy Hook, was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier auto eastward on Bradley Lane and approaching its intersection with Great Ring Road at about 3:57 am on July 12, after which the auto made a wide right turn onto Great Ring Road, drove off that road, and struck some mailboxes and a utility pole, police said.

There were no injuries.

Police verbally warned Godejohn for making an improper turn.

Truck Too Tall

Trucker Leonardo Lagoplanas, 43, of Brooklyn, N.Y., was driving a 2015 International Pro-Star truck northward on Botsford Hill Road at about 9:14 pm on July 11, when the vehicle attempted to drive below the Housatonic Railroad's overpass, but the truck's cab-mounted air dam and its vertical exhaust pipe struck the railroad overpass, according to police. The air dam became lodged under the overpass.

There were no injuries.

Police issued Lagoplanas an infraction for failure to obey low-clearance warning signs, which are posted near the overpass.

Hyundai Vs Signs

State police said motorist Griselle Ortega, 37, of New Britain, was driving a 2015 Hyundai Accent auto eastward on Interstate 84, near Exit 10, about 6:13 am on July 9, when the vehicle drove off the side of the highway and then struck two road signs and a light post.There were no injuries. State police said they issued Ortega an infraction for failure to maintain the proper lane.

Vehicular Vandalism

Police responded to a complaint on July 8 and learned that someone had vandalized a vehicle, which had been parked on Fox Run Lane South. The damage occurred sometime between 6 pm on July 7 and 11:30 am on July 8. Fox Run Lane South is a dead-end residential street that extends from Castle Hill Road.

Police did not describe the vehicle which was vandalized, nor the type of damage done to it.

Police are investigating the incident and ask anyone with knowledge of the matter to contact Officer Stephanie Vegerano at the police station at 203-426-5841.

Theft of Mats

Police report that sometime between 3:30 and 6 pm on July 7, someone stole 18 thick, heavy, black plastic mats, each of which measures 3-feet by 8-feet, that were lying alongside the road and also near a construction sign for a tree crew, near 24 Lakeview Terrace. The mats have a raised "diamond-plate" design on their surface.

The mats are used to protect landscaped areas from traffic flow.

Police are investigating the theft and ask anyone with knowledge of the crime to contact Officer Matthew Pirhala at the police station at 203 426-5841.

Truck Vs Pole

Police report that motorist Nicholas Zerella, 73, of Woodbury was driving a 2000 GMC Sierra pickup truck eastward on a rain-slicked Berkshire Road, about 3:14 pm, on July 7, when after maneuvering to avoid a truck that was parked on the road's right shoulder, he attempted to turn right to enter Jordan Hill Road.

The GMC, however, went out of control on the wet road and then struck some guardrailing and a utility pole.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance transported Zerella to Danbury Hospital to be checked for a possible injury, police report. Sandy Hook volunteer firefighters also responded to the incident.

Police said they verbally warned Zerella for traveling too fast for conditions.

Shoplifting Incident

Police report they responded to a shoplifting complaint made by staff at Olympia Sports at Sand Hill Plaza at 228 South Main Street, about 5:56 pm on July 7.

After investigating, police charged Erica Drummond, 31, of Waterbury, with sixth-degree larceny and with conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny. Police said they charged Samantha Bombardier, 24, of Naugatuck, with conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny.

Following arrest processing, police released Drummond and Bombardier on $1,000 and $500 bail, respectively. Both women are scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Danbury on July 25.

Larceny Arrest

Newtown police said that Brookfield police contacted them on the afternoon July 6 regarding a man whom Brookfield police had stopped and who they believed may have stolen some items from Newtown.

Newtown police said their investigation showed that Robert Mulready, 41, of Shelton had stolen a trailer and a snow blower from separate locations in Newtown, after which Newtown police charged him with fourth-degree larceny.

After arrest processing, Newtown police released Mulready on $1,000 bail for a July 20 arraignment on the charge in state Superior Court in Danbury.

Hawleyville Accident

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Mt Pleasant Road and Hawleyville Road about 1:43 pm on July 5.

Motorist Kevin Opinski, 30, of Bethel, who was driving a 2017 Nissan vehicle eastward on Mt Pleasant Road, stopped at the intersection and was waiting to make a left turn onto northbound Hawleyville Road, when eastbound motorist Robert Halliwell, 25, of Monroe, who was driving a 2013 Hyundai Sonata sedan, struck the rear end of the Nissan.

There were no injuries.

Police said they issued Halliwell a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Truck Hits SUV

About 2:55 pm on July 5, motorist Jonathan Morice, 45, of Ridgefield was driving a 2015 Jeep Wrangler SUV in the center lane of eastbound Interstate 84, just east of Exit 10, when trucker Michael Roy, 55, of South Windsor, who was driving a 2005 Freightliner M-2106 truck, entered the highway at the Exit 10 on-ramp and then attempted to merge into the center lane, but struck the Jeep, state police said.

There were no injuries. Roy received an infraction for failure to maintain the established lane.

Subaru Vs Porsche

About 12:55 pm on July 5, a two-vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of Church Hill Road and Walnut Tree Hill Road.

The accident involved motorist Catherine Brainard, 51, of Danbury, who was driving a 2011 Subaru Impreza, and motorist Abigail Tietjen, 32, of Colorado, who was driving a 1995 Porsche 968 sports car. There were no injuries.

Police report they issued Brainard a written warning for passing on the right. Police gave Tietjen an infraction for driving an unregistered vehicle.

SUV Rollover Crash

Motorist Dominic Scalzo, 16, of Newtown was driving a 2000 Jeep Cherokee SUV northward on Great Ring Road, near its intersection with Great Ring Road Extension, about 2:18 pm on July 5, when the vehicle took a curve on the road too fast, rolled over, went off the road, and then struck a tree, police said.

The vehicle had two teenage passengers, according to police. Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported passenger Justin Prestera, 17, of Sandy Hook, to Danbury Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Sandy Hook volunteer firefighters also responded to the incident.

Police said they issued Scalzo an infraction for making a restricted turn and for violating passenger restrictions on young drivers.

Toddy Hill Accident

A two-vehicle accident occurred on Toddy Hill Road, south of Meadow Woods Lane, about 2:38 pm on July 5, police report.

In that incident, motorist Donna Bernatchez, 54, of Milford was driving a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek SUV northward, as motorist Darren Galpin, 44, of Stratford was driving a 2015 Kia Soul SUV southward. As the vehicles approached each other, the Subaru drifted into the opposite lane and two vehicles' left exterior rear-view mirrors collided.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Bernatchez a written warning for failure to drive to the right.

Intersection Collision

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Berkshire Road, Grays Plain Road, and Bennetts Bridge Road about 7:31 pm on July 4, police said.

Motorist Owen McInerney, 18, of Newtown was driving a 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV carrying three passengers northward on Grays Plain Road, as motorist Martin Perez-Zamudio, 29, of Danbury was driving a 2003 Lincoln Aviator SUV carrying three passengers westward on Berkshire Road.

Police report that the Hyundai did not stop for a stop sign and a flashing red signal at the intersection, after which it struck the Lincoln.

There were no injuries.

McInerney received an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign.

Underage Driver

Police report they responded to a one-vehicle accident on Orchard Hill Road, near its intersection with Hattertown Road, about 3:30 pm on July 3.

In that incident, a 15-year-old girl, who was unlicensed to drive, was driving a 2005 Audi A-4 auto eastward on Orchard Hill Road and then drove to the right and struck a rock wall. There were no injuries.

Police said they verbally warned the girl for driving without a license and for making a restricted turn.

Chevrolet Vs Deer

Motorist Jonathan Philbin, 28, of Waterbury was driving a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck eastward on Interstate 84, near Exit 11, at about 1:23 am on July 2, when a deer ran across the highway, resulting in the truck hitting the deer, state police said. There were no injuries.

Intersection Crash

Police report a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of South Main Street and Mile Hill Road, about 10:25 am on July 2.

In that incident, motorist Valerie Ritucci, no age given, of Naples, Fla., who was driving a 2016 BMW X-5 SUV southward on South Main Street, stopped and was waiting to make a left turn onto eastbound Mile Hill Road, after which the BMW was struck from behind by southbound motorist Catherine Murphy, 42, of Bethel, who was driving a 2011 GMC Acadia SUV.

There were no injuries.

Police said they issued Murphy a written warning for following too closely.

Sandy Hook Center

About 11:51 am on July 2, motorist Katarzyna Stellacci, 39, of Southbury, who was driving a 2018 Audi Q-5 SUV westward on Church Hill Road in Sandy Hook Center, stopped and was waiting to make a left turn to enter a parking lot, after which the Audi was struck from behind  by westbound motorist Maria Dutsar, 23, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2008 Toyota Camry sedan.

There were no injuries.

Police said they issued Dutsar a written warning for following too closely.

Impreza Vs Impala

A two-car collision occurred on Obtuse Road, near its intersection with Newbury Road, on July 1, according to police.

In that incident, motorist Kyle Ziegler, 18, of Kensington, who was driving a 2008 Subaru Impreza southward, crossed over the roadway's center line and struck a northbound 2008 Chevrolet Impala driven by Elaine Karl, 25, of Bethel, police report.

There were no injuries.

Ziegler received an infraction for a travel lane violation.

I-84 Chain-Reaction

State police report a three-vehicle chain-reaction accident on eastbound Interstate 84, just east of the Parmalee Hill Road overpass, at about 5:30 pm on July 1.

In heavy traffic, motorist Lynn Sheeran, 47, of New Milford, who was driving a 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan SUV, slowed and was then struck from behind by motorist Joel Contreras, 23, of New Haven, who was driving a 2017 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck.

A 2012 Nissan Rogue SUV driven by Timothy Pearlman, 23, of Sandy Hook then struck the rear end of the Toyota.

There were no injuries.

State police said that both Contreras and Pearlman failed to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Burglary/Larceny

Police reported this week that at about 5:30 am on June 24, they received a report from an alarm company concerning a burglary occurring at Sal e Pepe, a restaurant at 97 South Main Street, so they responded to investigate.

Police said that someone had pried open the front door of the business, entered the premises, and stole a small amount of cash. The case is under investigation.

A two-vehicle collision occurred at the Main Street flagpole intersection at noon on July 13. Police said motorist Alyson Tabot, 68, of Danbury was driving a 2011 Honda Fit hatchback southward on Main Street, as Merlin MacDermoth, 39, of Danbury was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado K-3500 dump truck westward on Church Hill Road. The Chevrolet stopped at a stop sign and then proceeded into the intersection, after which it was struck by the Honda, which was passing a line of stopped vehicles on the right, police said. Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps treated and released Tabot at the scene, police said. Newtown Hook & Ladder volunteer firefighters, including Mike Aurelia and Milt Adams, responded to the incident. Police said they issued Tabot an infraction for passing on the right. Police report they gave MacDermoth an infraction for driving without a license. (Bee Photo, Hicks)
Police report that at about 12:45 pm on July 10, Jonathan Burke, 39, of Trumbull, who was driving a commercial 2011 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck northward on South Main Street, attempted to make a right turn to enter a driveway at 219 South Main Street, when the truck was struck from behind by northbound motorist Joseph Castle, 72, of Maryland, who was driving a 2006 Hyundai sedan. Castle was transported by the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance to Danbury Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, according to police. Botsford and Hook & Ladder volunteer firefighters responded to the accident. The incident is under investigation. (Bee Photo Voket)
