To the Editor:

Many thanks to all the voters who came out [July 24] to attend the Republican Caucus. What a great turnout! I missed securing the endorsement last night by only six votes, which only proves that every single vote does count. My supporters are well appreciated and I am now officially announcing my intent to reserve a spot on the ballot as a candidate for town clerk.

In less than seven weeks, the residents of Newtown will have the privilege of casting their ballot at the Republican Primary. As one of the candidates in this election, I hope that in those seven weeks I give our voters reasons to feel good about entrusting me with the honor of their vote on September 12 for town clerk.

As you may or may not know, I spent many years working in the town clerk's office, which was a job I loved and completely suited my skill set. For the past five years, I have spent my time serving Newtown in its Social Services Department. This position has offered me the opportunity to become sensitive to certain needs in our community. While state statutes dictate the duties of the town clerk, I would like to see some changes made to offer additional services to our residents with no impact on taxes.

Specifically, I will bring back the ability to purchase hunting and fishing licenses at the town clerk's office as well as the ability to purchase a transfer station permit. These are simple services that should be offered to all of our residents; in particular, to those who do not have a computer or need assistance navigating through websites. Some town departments offer residents the ability to transact their business using credit/debit cards and the town clerk's office should do the same.

Early/late office hours will be offered giving individuals the option of getting a marriage license, dog license, fishing license, etc, without having to take time off from their busy work schedule. These are only some examples of how simple changes can make your visit to the town clerk's office a positive one. Finally, I will immediately appoint a deputy town clerk to recognize the hard work currently being done by the assistant town clerks.

This appears to be a time of change in Newtown. It is my belief that I have the skills, experience, and the desire to make positive, constructive changes necessary to fulfill the needs of our community. As a candidate for town clerk, I have a great understanding of the position and the importance of doing it well and with integrity. My goal is to give you reasons to be confident and excited about voting for me in this upcoming election. See you in September!

Ann M. LoBosco, Candidate for Town Clerk

27 Copper Creek Circle, Newtown         July 25, 2017
