In August, police plan to conduct a crosswalk enforcement project in the town center to raise public awareness about the state law that requires motorists to yield to pedestrians standing in marked crosswalks while waiting to cross the street.

The crosswalk enforcement will occur on various unspecified dates during August, according to Sergeant Aaron Bahamonde, who heads the police department’s traffic unit.

Police plan to conduct the enforcement in view of recent incidents in which there were vehicle/pedestrian collisions and near-misses, he said. The enforcement is intended to reduce the number of such vehicle/pedestrian incidents, he said.

In the project, plainclothes police officers will attempt to cross streets in marked crosswalks as traffic approaches.

Police will issue infractions bearing fines to motorists who do not yield for pedestrians in crosswalks, the sergeant said. The current fine for that offense is $181.

Sergeant Bahamonde urges that the motoring public drive cautiously when traveling near crosswalks.

Newtown Police Department will be taking a no-excuses approach to seatbelt law enforcement, writing citations day and night, during the current Click It Or Ticket seatbelt use campaign.
